Summer Placement – Façade Engineer
From helping shape entire cities to adapting infrastructure to deal with the climate emergency, a career at Buro Happold presents the chance to make a difference. With a world‑class reputation, our creativity and our people have delivered positive change to clients, the environment, and communities alike. If you want to be part of something bigger, this is your chance.
What is Façade Engineering? The quality of the 'skin' of your building is about much more than achieving the aesthetic vision; it is about buildability, efficiency and long‑term sustainability.
Fasade functions include weather resistance, airtightness, structural integrity and energy impact. An efficient, buildable façade makes for a better building and we work constantly to provide more efficient skins.
Our team takes the client from concept design, through construction, to operation and maintenance, and even to refurbishment or re‑purposing. Notable projects include the Louvre, Abu Dhabi, the Grade II listed Whiteley in London, Bee’ah Headquarters in the UAE, Glasgow Museum of Transport, City of Dreams Macau, and many more.

- Deliver work in a timely and technically competent manner.
- Increase awareness of weather performance and basic building physics including ventilation, solar gain control, thermal insulation and glare control.
- Help assess and advise on the impact of design decisions in terms of embodied carbon, operational carbon and life‑cycle durability.
- Develop experience in handling and fabricating typical cladding materials.
- Understand the design life of façade components and inspect existing buildings to identify failures or defects.

- Collaborate with other design disciplines (Architecture, Structures, Building Services/MEP, Fire Engineering, Acoustics, computer modelling).
- Develop strong façade design leadership for the client’s design team.
