Position: Early Years Temporary Assistant -TERM TIME ONLY
Location: Greater London

TEACHING ASSISTANT: EYFS/Pre Prep School (7.30- 6.15 shifts) with end times of 6.15pm on two occasions). TERM TIME ONLY

JOB DESCRIPTION AND PERSON SPECIFICATION

Safeguarding Children
  • Promote and safeguard the welfare of children for whom you are responsible and with whom you have contact
  • Maintain good order and discipline among the children, safeguarding their health and safety on school premises and off‑site school visits
  • Promote the progress and well‑being of each child and any groups of children assigned to you
Making Observations
  • Contribute to observations of children identified as focus children by the teacher
  • Discuss observations with teachers, contribute to Weekly Planning meetings where activities, experiences and resources for the following week are being planned in relation to focus children’s interests and needs
  • Read and develop knowledge and understanding of the seven areas of Learning and Development in the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum. This is essential for developing the skills to make good observations of children
Child‑Led Play
  • Follow playtime schedules, indoors and out
  • Participate in a weekly meeting and work as a team with other TAs to help look after, renew and prepare resources, equipment and activities for the following week
  • Help to prepare and set up activities, resources and experiences for indoors and outdoors child‑led play as directed by teacher
  • Provide guidance to children on educational and social matters
  • Follow children’s lead. Look and listen to what they are doing and saying, recognising children’s aims in their play and making sensitive interventions
  • Talk to children about what they are doing
  • Show regard for the individual needs of every child
Classroom Duties
  • Work alongside the teacher to prepare resources and set up focus and tabletop activities according to the teacher’s Weekly Plan
  • Support the children in their learning during adult‑led and child‑initiated tasks, encouraging the children to work independently and supporting children as they develop skills, knowledge and understanding
  • Tidy and clean up at the end of activities
  • Ensure resource cupboards are kept tidy and well‑organised
  • Help to arrange storage of new materials and resource orders as needed
  • Alert School Administrator when resources are running out, so that an order can be put in for more supplies
  • Help with displays
  • Prepare art materials
Educational Methods
  • Cooperate with the Headteacher and teachers on the preparation and development of the curriculum, focus activities, learning materials, teaching programmes, methods of teaching and assessment, pastoral arrangements
Hours
  • 7.30-4.30 with one or possibly two, 6.15pm finishes. These times are fixed but you may need to be flexible from time to time
Qualifications
  • Good basic education to GCSE level in literacy and numeracy i.e. Education at a minimum of Level 2
  • A relevant qualification in Childcare and/or Education at a minimum of Level 3
  • A Paediatric First Aid qualification
  • Child Protection training
Experience
  • Previous experience of working with young children eg as a parent or voluntary worker

Desirable:

  • Previous experience in a setting for young or school‑aged children
Knowledge & Understanding

Knowledge and understanding of the following:

  • Needs of young children
  • Child development
  • How children learn
  • Behaviour management strategies
  • Equal opportunities Relevant curriculums eg EYFS, National Curriculum
  • Phonics
