Start Date:

ASAP

Are you passionate about supporting children and young people with complex special educational needs? We are seeking a compassionate, proactive, and resilient SEN Teaching Assistant to join our specialist provision in the London Borough of Merton.

Our setting supports pupils aged 2-19 with a wide range of complex learning needs. We are a nurturing and highly supportive school community committed to providing personalised learning and holistic development for every pupil.

About Our Pupils

The children and young people in our school have a range of needs, including:

  • Severe Learning Difficulties (SLD)

  • Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties (PMLD)

  • Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC)

  • Complex medical needs

  • Physical disabilities

  • Communication and interaction needs

  • Sensory processing differences

  • Social, emotional, and behavioural needs linked to communication challenges

Many pupils are non-verbal or pre-verbal and use alternative communication systems such as PECS, Makaton, communication boards, or AAC devices. Some require personal care support, mobility assistance, or feeding support. All pupils benefit from structured routines, visual supports, and a highly individualised approach.

The Role

As an SEN Teaching Assistant, you will:

  • Support pupils 1:1 and in small groups under the direction of the class teacher

  • Assist with implementing EHCP targets and personalised learning plans

  • Promote communication, independence, and life skills

  • Support pupils with personal care and medical needs where required

  • Help manage behaviour positively using structured and consistent approaches

  • Contribute to creating a safe, engaging, and inclusive classroom environment

  • Work closely with therapists, medical staff, and families

We Are Looking For Someone Who:
  • Has experience working with children or young people with SEND (school, care, or support setting)

  • Is patient, empathetic, and resilient

  • Understands or is willing to learn about complex needs and alternative communication methods

  • Can remain calm under pressure

  • Works effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team

  • Is committed to safeguarding and promoting pupil wellbeing

Relevant qualifications (e.g., Level 2/3 Teaching Assistant, Health & Social Care, Childcare) are desirable but not essential for the right candidate.

What We Offer
  • A welcoming and supportive staff team

  • Ongoing specialist training and CPD

  • Opportunities to develop within SEND education

  • A meaningful role where every day makes a difference

  • Term-time working pattern

If you are dedicated to helping children with complex needs thrive and want to be part of a specialist school committed to inclusion and excellence, we would love to hear from you.
