EK Outreach Services provides specialist 1:1 and 2:1 to students who cannot access mainstream schooling due to SEND, mental health challenges, medical needs, or other barriers. Our aim is to re‑engage, inspire, and empower students, ensuring they achieve their academic and personal potential. We work closely with local authorities, schools, wider professionals, carers and families to provide bespoke education and support, delivering high‑quality learning both in students' homes and in community settings.
Role OverviewThe Head of English is responsible specifically for the leadership and development of English throughout the provision, ensuring that each pupil is positively encouraged to develop their potential to the full.
The Head of English will be expected to work closely with colleagues in the department and across other curriculum areas. The post holder will also teach all aspects of the English curriculum to a high standard.
Key Responsibilities 1. Teaching and Student Engagement- Planning, implementing and reviewing the English curriculum
- Contributing to the spiritual, moral, social and cultural development of pupils
- Supporting vulnerable learners through adaptive curriculum design and close monitoring
- Overseeing the development and training of staff in the department and supervision of departmental staff
- Ensuring that assessment is both regular and thorough and that full records of pupils are kept;
- Representing the department within the provision in matters relating to the curriculum and management
- Liaising with other department coordinators
- Cooperating with senior staff in developing links with external companies that would help the curriculum.
- Leading regular departmental meetings
- Implementing the ongoing development of the subject area
- Organising and attending field trips as required
- Reviewing and developing practical work
- Delivering subject‑specific programmes
- Provision of extension activities
- Managing the provision of textbooks and resources
- Providing information on Public Examination entries to the Examinations Officer
- Being available to provide advice and guidance on Examinations
- Line managing English tutors, including performance management and professional development planning
- Writing and implementing a departmental development plan aligned to whole provision priorities
- Maintaining awarding body compliance (keeping schemes of work and assessments aligned with specifications)
- Leading development of shared curriculum resources to ensure consistency across tutors and settings
- Monitoring daily running records for attendance, engagement, provision and progress
- Writing and quality assuring PLPs with measurable targets
- Contributing to safeguarding and pastoral processes
- Ensuring Health and Safety guidelines are followed
- Ensuring that classrooms present a stimulating environment
- Implementing all school policies
- Leading departmental CPD, including onboarding new tutors and upskilling staff
- Standardising assessment and marking practices across the department
- Ensuring consistency and quality of English provision across the outreach model
- Carrying out a share of supervisory duties
- Participating in appropriate meetings with colleagues and parents relative to the above duties
- Contributing to the PSCHE programme when required
- Attending whole School events e.g. Inset Days, Award Evenings etc
- Providing cover and examination assistance as required
- Contributing subject level data to senior leadership and external stakeholders
- Managing new student referrals within English (tutor allocation, timetabling and coordinating start of provision)
- Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or equivalent teaching qualification (e.g., PGCE, Level 5 Diploma in Education).
- Proven experience working with SEND students or those facing barriers to education (e.g., SEMH, ASD, ADHD, medical needs).
