Responsibilities

Birkbeck, University of London, is looking to recruit a part-time, fixed-term Associate Lecturer to teach this Summer term 2026.

Joining the School of Psychological Sciences, you would teach on the following module:

  • Psychology for Personal and Professional Development, Level 5
  • 30 hours of teaching
  • Tuesday evening 6-9pm, Term 3.

Your main responsibility will be the preparation, teaching, administration, and assessment of the module Psychology for Personal and Professional Development, a Level 5 module offered across our BA Psychology programmes.

This module explores the study of psychology for personal development, professional practice, and its application across diverse professional contexts. Students will explore the application of core psychological principles, enhance their self-awareness, develop practical skills, and learn to apply psychological insights to enhance their personal and professional.

The module is compulsory for our BA Psychological Studies (Child Development and Education) and an option for other BA Psychological Studies programmes. As such, it will offer you the opportunity to bring your knowledge, expertise and teaching experience to enable these committed students to complete their studies successfully.

Classes are scheduled for Tuesday evenings, starting on Tuesday 28th April from 6.00pm to 9.00pm for 10 meetings. There is a reading week on 2nd June where no class will take place. Coursework for this module will be submitted in July 2026.

Candidate requirements
  • A degree in Psychology.
  • An excellent understanding of the ethical and reflective practice and the application of psychology to a variety of work contexts.
  • An understanding of communication, relationships and emotions in the workplace and work-related stress (or a willingness to explore these).
  • Relevant teaching experience, working with adult students within the HE sector.
  • A good understanding of the needs of adult learners and be able to relate well to their individual needs and engage their interest and enthusiasm.

PLEASE NOTE candidates need to demonstrate competence or significant potential in ALL areas.

Desirable
  • Postgraduate degree/s in a relevant area
  • Professional experience in the application of psychology to in one or more of the following settings: education, business, consumer, environment or health and counselling.
  • A teaching qualification - the successful candidate will be required to teach all sessions on the module.

Remuneration

Payment is based on an hourly rate depending on length of continuous service with the College (starting rate £69.68 per hour inclusive of pro-rata London Allowance and holiday pay) for contact hours worked.

This hourly rate is based on the starting point of Grade 7 and is inclusive of a ‘Duties Related to Teaching Multiplier’ at 2.5, which covers preparation, teaching, administration, assessment marking and other examining duties in connection with the course.

Contract
