Associate Lecturer - Research Methods in Practice

Birkbeck, University of London, is looking to recruit a part-time, fixed-term Associate Lecturer to teach the Summer term 2026.

Joining the School of Psychological Sciences, you would teach the following module:

• SCPS
  169H4 Research Methods in Practice, Level 4
• 39 hours of teaching
• Tuesday afternoons 2-5pm and/or evenings 6-9pm, Term 3, along with some Saturday sessions in some weeks (12-2pm).

Your main responsibility will be preparation, teaching, administration and assessment of the Research Methods in Practice module, a Level 4 module in our Certificate of Higher Education.

The module builds on and advances the understanding and knowledge students gained in the “Understanding Research methods for psychology” module. The focus is on a deeper understanding of the challenges of the research process including ethical considerations and the strengths and weaknesses of each approach. It also builds on students’ understanding of research design, data collection and statistical analysis.

The module is delivered on Tuesday afternoons, 2”5 p.m. and evenings, 6”9 p.m. in the Summer term along with some Saturdays (April to July). As an Associate Lecturer you will work closely with the programme director to organise, deliver and assess the module.

In addition to the criteria specified in the job pack, the minimum requirements for selection are listed below:

• A degree in Psychology.
• Relevant teaching experience working with adult students within the HE sector.
• A good understanding of the needs of part‐time adult learners and the ability to relate well to their individual needs, engaging their interest and enthusiasm.
• Experience of (or willingness to develop) a wide range of teaching and assessment methods.

candidates need to demonstrate competence or significant potential in all areas.

• Postgraduate degree(s) in a relevant area
• A teaching qualification – the successful candidate will be required to teach all sessions on the module.

Payment is based on an hourly rate depending on length of continuous service with the College (starting rate £69.68 per hour inclusive of pro‑rata London Allowance and holiday pay) for contact hours worked.

This hourly rate is based on the starting point of Grade 7 and is inclusive of a ‘Duties Related to Teaching Multiplier’ at00a02.5, which covers preparation, teaching, administration, assessment marking and other examining duties in connection with the course.
