The Education Academy within Barts Health is expanding in response to an increasing number of students and trainees and commitment to offer the best educational experience for our trainees. There is a real need to ensure that students receive excellent tuition and that trainees have the best possible educational supervision. In line with our Education Strategy, we intend to improve education by building an Education Fellow faculty base made up of Specialty Teaching Fellows who contribute to both undergraduate and postgraduate training and support inter‑professional innovations.
OverviewThe Academy provides a platform for faculty members to develop teaching skills and content expertise, ensuring high quality training for residents, fellows and students across the trust.
Main DutiesThe successful post holder will: develop educational opportunities for anaesthetic and intensive care trainees at Whipps Cross Hospital through a wide range of teaching modalities including simulation‑based training, clinical skills, lectures, teaching clinics, and bedside teaching. The post holder will work across sites with other education fellows. All fellows are encouraged to undertake a PG Cert in Education; those already holding one may pursue an ILM3 Leadership & Management course, with funding available to support this.
This role is suited to individuals wishing to undertake further specialist training in medicine and education prior to or as part of an Out of Programme Experience (OOPE) or Out of Programme Training (OPTT). Prior agreement must be sought with the relevant Specialty Training Committee (STC) and Deanery.

The post will be based at Whipps Cross University Hospital and is part of Barts NHS Trust.
Responsibilities include:
- Providing anaesthetic cover for all usual DGH specialties, including labour ward and intensive care.
- Delivering 20 hours of clinical timeesthesia, labour ward and ICU, and 16 hours of education and service delivery time on a fixed‑term, 36‑hour week contract.
- Supporting educational activities across the Trust, collaborating with simulation and clinical skills centres at Newham, Whipps Cross and Royal London hospitals.
- Developing and maintaining a personal development plan, undergoing regular appraisal with clinical supervisor and Director of Medical Education/Specialty Tutor/Simulation Lead.
- MBBS
- ALS/ATLS
- Primary FRCA
- Registration and licensing held within the GMC
- Basic level training certificate in Anaesthesia; higher qualifications in Education, Research, a relevant clinical area or Simulation
- FRCA or equivalent
- Anaesthetist in year IMT3/ST3+ or equivalent
- Previous experience teaching UK medical students
- Minimum three years in recognised specialist anaesthetic training posts
- Evidence of achievement of ST3 competences in anaesthetics at application
- Experience providing anaesthetic cover for usual DGH specialties
- NHS clinical experience
- Experience delivering education, ideally in an inter‑professional setting
- Publications in peer‑reviewed journals
- Demonstrated experience with simulation‑based education events
- Demonstrated experience in research‑based activities and data collection
- Basic knowledge of educational theory
- Computer literacy:

- Excellent communication and negotiation skills
