The University of London

The University of London is both the UK’s largest provider of international distance and online learning and the convenor of a federation of 17 renowned higher education institutions.

The federation brings together more than 250,000 learners and 50,000 staff in a collaborative community that is delivering high-quality research and education across all disciplines.

Since 1858, we have expanded access to world‑class higher education. Today, around 40,000 students in more than 190 countries are part of our global learning community.

By working together, we expand access to outstanding higher education and resources and extend their benefits to learners and researchers across the UK and around the world.

The School of Advanced Study

The School of Advanced Study is a nationally and internationally recognised centre of excellence in the promotion and facilitation of research in the Humanities and Social Sciences. It comprises eight internationally renowned research institutes as well as centres of excellence in Digital Humanities, Refugee Law and Public Engagement. It has four nationally and internationally recognised specialist research libraries.

The role offered is in one of our centres of excellence – the Refugee Law Initiative working to support our award winning Clinic. Refugee Law Clinic | Refugee Law Initiative

Established in 2020, the University of London’s Refugee Law Clinic is an innovative project providing pro bono legal advice for refugee clients. Its work provides some of the most disadvantaged communities in London with access to fair and equal legal representation, a basic human right which many asylum seekers in the UK struggle to find.

The clinic is supported by the Central University and by 10 of the University’s Member Institutions. It is based on a model of Clinical Legal Education for the University’s diverse student body and facilitates practical experience for students working on real cases under the supervision of a qualified expert lawyer. Delivered in partnership with two law firms, the Refugee Law Clinic also provides the opportunity for lawyers to undertake pro‑bonlo work within the clinic.

The clinic's main legal focus is on advising and preparing fresh claims for asylum, an area identified as underserviced in the current legal landscape, and it aims to complement the work of law firms and other service providers in London.

The Role

The postholder supports the Clinic manager by providing support for the day‑to‑day operations of the Clinic and related academic activities, including volunteer programmes, resources, records and statistics management, reporting and contributing to the strategic and operational objectives of the clinic. The Clinic is located in the School of Advanced Study’s Institute of Advanced Legal Studies building located in Russell Square.
