Senior Clinical Fellow in Electrophysiology

To work alongside the existing specialist registrars/fellows in the Heart Division and Arrhythmia Care Group. Clinical activity will include out-patient clinics, inpatient care including ward rounds, referrals, research and audit, as well as training opportunities in the EP/devices catheter laboratories. General cardiology service commitments include participating in the cardiology ward and on-call rota.

To provide clinical services in cardiology, in accordance with clinical and legal requirements and in keeping with the international role of the Trust.

About us

Royal Brompton Hospital (RBH) is a specialist cardiothoracic centre specialising in diseases of the heart and lung, with services for adults (Cardiology, Cardiothoracic Surgery and Thoracic Medicine) and Paediatrics. It has approximately 2,100 staff, 300 beds, 6 operating theatres, 5 catheter laboratories, a private patients' ward and extensive imaging facilities. The hospital has recently opened the Cardiovascular Biomedical Research Unit (BRU) in partnership with Imperial College London.

This facility offers a CMR scanner, catheter lab and echocardiography suite for research purposes, as well as state of the art genetic analysis facilities.

Job responsibilities
  • Participate in the cardiology on-call rota (ward cover, long day on-call and nights) covering inpatient activity and emergency work.
  • To be part of the cardiology service at Royal Brompton Hospital in collaboration with medical and surgical colleagues and other departments and services.
  • Participate in new patient and follow-up consultant-led outpatient clinics.
  • Provide inpatient services to cardiology patients.
  • Participate in an on-call rota covering inpatient activity and emergency work.
  • Supervise and train junior staff allocated to cardiology.
  • To work as a full member of the multi-disciplinary team, including participation in the rota and the attendance and presentation at weekly MDTs and meetings.
  • To undertake regular ward rounds to ensure effective management during the in-patient stay and early discharge of patients whenever possible.
  • Participate in audit within the department.
  • Participate fully in the service and training programme of the Division.
  • Perform routine transthoracic echocardiography, routine right and left cardiac catheterisation and perform and interpret echocardiograms.
Person Specification Qualifications / Training
  • Full GMC registration with a licence to practice
  • MBBS, or equivalent
  • MRCP, or equivalent
  • Additional, BSc, MSc, MD(Res), PhD
Experience
  • Minimum of 3 years of cardiology training with basic knowledge and practical experience of echocardiography, diagnostic coronary angiography, acute coronary care and treatment of heart failure
  • Practical skills: vascular access, right and left heart catheterisation and coronary angiography
  • Experience in cardiac pacing/ICDs and/or cardiac electrophysiology
  • Teaching experience (e.g. medical students and junior doctors)
  • Advanced life support training (ALS or equivalent)
Skills, Knowledge and Abilities
  • Advanced knowledge of cardiovascular disease, with specific interest in cardiac arrhythmias
  • Proficient and efficient in handling medical problems
  • Audit/Quality Improvement: understands principles, evidence of enthusiasm or participation
