Main dutiesThe obstetric service undertakes >5000 deliveries per annum. Most births are to families resident in Tower Hamlets, an area with a high level of socio‑economic deprivation and a rising birth rate. There is a high incidence of consanguinity with resultant congenital anomalies, and gestational diabetes is a cause of significant neonatal morbidity. The Trust has a large adult renal unit that attracts tertiary antenatal referrals, and with the provision of neonatal surgery, there is an increasing number of referrals with congenital surgical anomalies.
The obstetric unit is well supported by six consultant obstetric anaesthetists and is achieving 98 hours of resident consultant cover per week. A weekly joint perinatal and monthly mortality meeting assists effective inter‑departmental communication and is of great educational value. The neonatal unit runs at high occupancy levels, and there is a high level of direct consultant‑delivered care and supervision.
