Salary: £85,000 a year - full time equivalent

Cromwell Hospital is seeking an experienced Registrar-level Resident Doctor (ST3+) in General Surgery to join our highly regarded surgical team. This is an excellent opportunity to work in a leading private hospital environment, delivering high-quality, consultant-led surgical care across a broad range of general surgical specialties.

Job Description

As a Registrar-level RMO, you will play a key role in the day‑to‑day management of general surgical inpatients, working closely with consultant surgeons, anaesthetists, intensive care team, critical care outreach, nursing teams, and allied health professionals. The post requires strong clinical judgment, autonomy, and excellent communication skills within a private healthcare setting.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide daily ward rounds and ongoing clinical management of general surgical patients.
  • Assess and manage post‑operative patients, including recognition and management of complications.
  • Provide out‑of‑hours and on‑call cover for general surgery as required.
  • Respond promptly to deteriorating patients and initiate appropriate escalation.
  • Perform and supervise routine ward‑based procedures appropriate to grade (e.g. wound care, drains, line insertion).
  • Liaise closely with consultant surgeons regarding patient progress and management plans.
  • Coordinate investigations, imaging, and referrals.
  • In the event of an emergency, you may be asked to assist in theatre, which is an exceptional circumstance and only with permission from the Associate Medical Director/Chief Medical Officer.
  • Ensure accurate clinical documentation, discharge summaries, patient correspondence, and prescriptions.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary team working and handovers.
  • Uphold Bupa Cromwell Hospital standards for patient safety, governance, and clinical excellence.
Essential Skills & Experience
  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification.
  • Full GMC registration with a licence to practice.
  • ST3 level or above (or equivalent international experience).
  • Minimum 3–4 years postgraduate surgical experience.
  • MRCS examination (or equivalent postgraduate surgical qualification).
  • Demonstrated competence in general surgery inpatient and post‑operative care.
  • ALS certification (or equivalent).
  • Strong clinical decision‑making and escalation skills.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating within a consultant‑led team.
  • Eligibility to work in the UK.
Desirable
  • Previous experience in private healthcare or UK independent sector and NHS.
  • CCrISP Course – Care of the critically ill surgical patient.
  • Exposure to subspecialties such as colorectal, upper GI, hepatobiliary, or minimally invasive surgery.
  • Experience managing complex post‑operative patients.
  • Interest in clinical governance, audit, or quality improvement.
  • Experience of teaching at undergraduate and postgraduate level of medical and non‑medical staff.
  • Computer literacy.
