GUY'S AND ST. THOMAS' HOSPITAL NHS FOUNDATION TRUST

Clinical Fellow in Transplant and Renal Medicine

Full Time - 40 hours per week (No Sunday or Night Shifts)

Fixed Term - 3 months with a view to extend

Main duties of the job

This post would suit trainees wishing to pursue a career in transplant and medicine or someone weighing up career options. It provides an excellent opportunity to expand knowledge in pre/post-operative management of surgical patients on a busy transplant ward and to develop basic general surgical/vascular/urological technical skills. Those wishing to improve their academic portfolio will be supported to do so. The post will incorporate ward and on-call commitments as well as theatre and outpatient commitments.

There will be an opportunity to have allocated time (around 25%) for a Quality Improvement project; the post will therefore suit individuals who wish to develop these areas, and will also suit those who wish to work less than full time. The postholder will be supervised by a Renal medicine Consultant as well as the Transplant medical team with whom they will be working closely.

About us

The Department of Renal and Transplant at Guy's is one of the largest in the Updated November 2016 UK, providing kidney care to South East London, neighbouring areas of Kent and the Channel Islands. In addition, we receive a significant number of complex referrals from a much wider geographical area. We provide a comprehensive range of services for this population, from management of mild kidney disease through to acute kidney injury (AKI) and the full range of modalities of renal replacement therapy.

We perform over 250 transplants each year, have the largest living kidney donor programme in the country and are a supra-regional centre for both combined kidney/pancreas and pancreas alone transplantation. The pancreas programme is growing and around 25% of our living donor transplants are antibody incompatible.

We offer a full range of peritoneal and haemodialysis therapies both at home and through a network of satellite units. We are nationally recognised for quality of care, innovation in clinical practice and service delivery, and for our close functional and geographical integration with the research programmes of both the MRC Transplantation Centre and the Comprehensive Biomedical Research Centre.

Job responsibilities

This FY3 post forms part of the ST1+ medical team in the Renal Unit, together with Internal Medicine Trainees, trainees in intensive care medicine, and clinical fellows. The posts would be suitable for anyone wishing to gain experience in renal medicine and transplantation, including prior to applying to the IMT programme, or to acquisition of a training number. The post provides excellent training in all aspects of renal medicine.

It offers unparalleled experience in acute renal transplantation in an internationally renowned centre.

The postholder will be will be based at Guys hospital with their clinical time split 50/50 between Richard Bright and Patience ward.
