This post provides an opportunity to gain ST1-3 level experience in paediatrics, including paediatric subspecialties, at a busy tertiary paediatric centre. It would suit someone looking to expand their paediatric experience in the UK prior to applying for training including FY3 experience. The post offers experience with a wide range of complex and interesting patients and an excellent teaching programme.
Responsibilities- Part of the general paediatric ST1-3 on-call rota and will provide cover for different areas of paediatric medicine, including inpatient wards, the ambulatory unit and the children’s emergency department. The post is a full shift pattern including daytime and out of hours working including night shifts.
- Care for a mixed general and subspecialist paediatric patient group within a large unit, including daily assessment of children, planning of treatment, arranging investigations, and liaising with other departments and teams.
- Work within the following subspecialty areas as part of the ward-based team:
Paediatric Infectious Diseases/Oncology;
Paediatric Surgery;
Paediatric Neurosciences; and Paediatric Community Services, supporting regional tertiary services where applicable. - Infectious diseases and oncology duties involve caring for patients on Pinckney ward, attending infectious diseases meetings, and participating in relevant clinics.
- In paediatric surgery and neurology/neurosurgery, participate in ward rounds and coordinate investigations and treatments in collaboration with consultants and specialists.
- Contribute to the multidisciplinary team to ensure safe, high-quality care for children and families served by the department.
- Only candidates with relevant experience of paediatrics in the UK will be shortlisted for interview.
- UK paediatric experience preferred to support continuity of care during the rotation.
St. George’s Hospital is a large multi-specialty facility in Southwest London, offering a wide range of adult, paediatric and neonatal services, co-located with St. George’s, University of London. The department has its own outpatient service (the Dragon Centre), a child development centre, and 5 wards with 57 inpatient beds, a 10-bed PICU/HDU and 36 cot NICU. The hospital supports 35 paediatric consultants and a fully staffed EWTD compliant rota for middle grade and junior doctors.
