Overview
University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is seeking a Clinical Fellow in Cellular Pathology with a special interest in Haematopathology. This is a 12-month fixed-term contract.
The post provides a specialist training fellowship at the SpR level in Cellular Pathology with a focus on Haematopathology. It is suitable for trainees with at least three years of prior histopathology experience or who have recently completed their FRCPath and wish to specialise in this area. The post-holder will work with Consultants and Specialist Registrars in Cellular Pathology to deliver haematopathology services at UCLH and network hospitals.
All candidates must be eligible for full GMC registration.
The post is full-time (40 hours per week) with no on-call commitment.
Main duties and responsibilities- The appointee will take on duties of an experienced specialist registrar within the department and work in haematopathology while supporting other areas of cellular pathology when required.
- Assist in providing a diagnostic service to UCLH and to other hospitals/departments that refer cases for expert opinion.
- Engage with a routine workload in haematopathology, including a broad spectrum of diagnostic cases, network referrals, and tertiary referral cases.
- Opportunity to develop and consolidate diagnostic skills in haematopathology and to learn ancillary techniques; rotation to diagnostic flow cytometry and molecular laboratory at the Halo can be arranged but is optional.
- Report on haematopathology cases under supervision and support other areas of cellular pathology/histopathology on a rota basis.
- Contribute to the preparation of haematology specimen cut up and assist specialist registrars as required; may attend and present at weekly haematopathology MDT meetings.
The diagnostic annual workload for haematopathology is around 4,500 cases and includes lymph node core biopsies, excisions, and bone marrow trephines, diagnostic and follow-up work.

Person Specification Knowledge and Qualifications- Eligible for full GMC registration at time of appointment and hold a current licence to practise
- MBBS or equivalent
- FRCPath
- Evidence of at least three years of previous experience in histopathology
- Clear and effective written and spoken English; ability to build rapport, listen, and negotiate
- Flexibility to work within specialist teams, take responsibility, lead and make decisions where appropriate
- Empathy and collaborative approach to patient care
- Dynamic team member capable of contributing to the running of the department
- Participation in clinical audits and attendance at relevant courses
- Attendance at a management course
- Previous audits presented and/or published
- Ability to teach pathology to trainees, medical students, and biomedical scientists
- Willingness to participate in research and clinical trials; ability to collaborate in active research programmes
- Record of completed research and peer-reviewed publications in sub-speciality areas

Salary: £65,048 per year plus London weighting
