Overview
The Neurosurgical Skull Base Fellow is a 12‑month, RCS‑accredited, senior neurosurgical trainee based at King’s College Hospital NHS Foundation Trust. The role provides extensive operative, clinical, and research experience in skull base, pituitary, and facial pain pathology, preparing the fellow for a consultant position.
Responsibilities- Assess and investigate patients with skull base/pituitary lesions and facial pain pathology.
- Lead operative practice: perform 60–80 pituitary surgeries as lead surgeon by fellowship end.
- Participate in multidisciplinary meetings (pituitary MDM, skull base MDMs, facial pain clinic, NF‑1/2 clinics).
- Attend 1–2 national/international meetings annually and present abstracts where COVID permits.
- Conduct regular literature reviews and clinical data analysis.
- Share responsibility for neurosurgical patients beyond rota commitments, second on call in a 1 in 6 rota.
- Progress meetings with fellowship lead; award RCS Certificate upon successful completion.
- Eligible for registration with the GMC.
- MBBS (or equivalent) and FRCS (Neurosurgery) or equivalent.
- Substantial experience in general neurosurgery; within 12 months of CCT; trauma neurosurgery experience.
- Exposure to skull base neurosurgery and commitment to a career in skull base neurosurgery (desirable).
- PhD, MD, or other original research credentials (desirable).
- Expertise in elective and emergency neurosurgery.
- Ability to prioritise clinical need and manage risk.
- Strong audit and research participation.
- Effective multidisciplinary teamwork and organisational skills.
- Previous publications or presentations highly regarded.
