Clinical Research Fellow in Neurosurgery

University College London Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust

The closing date is 07 January 2026

Applications are invited for three Clinical Research Fellow posts in Neurosurgery. These posts would be ideally suited to anyone with an interest in surgical technologies such as robotics, artificial intelligence, neurotechnology and simulation. They would be suitable for Trust SHO's or trainees.

Clinical work will be carried out at the National Hospital for Neurology and Neurosurgery (NHNN), an internationally renowned hospital for clinical practice and world‑class clinical research in neurosciences.

Academic work will be carried out at the Surgical Technology at Queen Square Group (TeQ Group). It is closely associated with NHNN and the UCL Queen Square Institute of Neurology (IoN), Hawkes Institute (surgical innovation centre), and the Francis Crick Institute. Together, the NHNN, UCL IoN, Hawkes Institute, and Francis Crick Institute provide an unparalleled opportunity for innovation in neurosurgery.

The post holders will work as a trust grade SHO working on a split pattern of clinical and research duties (80:20).

Main duties of the job

The clinical duties will include ward rounds and inpatient care as well as after hours on call duties. Although this is not an official training role, we believe training is important.

  • Weekly seminars by consultant speakers from within Queen Square.
  • Monthly Brain School by invited consultant speakers from across London.
  • Annual Victor Horsley lecture by prominent neurosurgeons from across the world.
  • Priority access to the Queen Square Neurosurgical Review course, featuring an international faculty of more than 35 speakers.
  • Specialty Research Group meetings, including vascular, hydrocephalus, functional, and pituitary meetings, that have resulted in numerous presentations and publications.
  • Programme designed to help those applying for an ST1 national training number including a mock national selection event.
  • Access to the Medtronic drilling course.

The Fellows will also have the opportunity to gain extensive experience of applied translational research in one of several areas, depending on their preference, including: pituitary and skull base surgery; neuro‑oncology; vascular surgery; and spinal surgery.
