Position Summary

Under the general supervision of the Supervisor of Roads & Traffic and technical direction and guidance of the Roads and Transportation - Lead Hand, assists with various tasks of inspecting, maintaining, and repairing the City’s transportation network and related infrastructure within approved policies and guidelines, and in compliance with legislative requirements.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assists with the performance of road maintenance activities including road patching, digging ditches and trenches, brush removal, painting, asphalt laying, placing & compaction of road bases, etc.
  • Assists with the forming and finishing of concrete products such as sidewalks, curbs, approaches, and bridge decks.
  • Assists with other road maintenance activities including but not limited to line painting, bridge washing, guardrail repair, transit stop maintenance, turf repair, graffiti removal, etc.
  • Cleans and maintains sidewalks, streets, roads and public grounds by picking up and disposing of garbage, needles, dead animals, and other debris as required.
  • Assists with the installation and removal of traffic control procedures in accordance with Ontario Traffic Manual Book 7 (Temporary Conditions).
  • Loads and unloads trucks with supplies and equipment.
  • Operates vehicles and equipment within established operating procedures in order to ensure that all applicable guidelines, procedures, regulations are complied with.
  • Completes and ensures Daily Work Activity Report/Log are completed both manually and/or electronically, pre and post trip inspections are completed, and any deficiencies are reported to their Supervisor.
  • Maintains facility, tools, equipment and vehicles in a clean and tidy condition.
  • May assist with performing routine maintenance and repair on equipment.
  • Uses hand & power tools, operates light trucks, compressors, line painting and street signing equipment.
  • Participates in all Health & Safety requirements as deemed necessary by the Corporation while performing duties, as well as any legislated training/certification required to carry out activities.
  • Participates in training/seminars as required by the Supervisor and/or Manager.
  • Completes and maintains departmental paperwork, as required.
  • Performs other such related duties, responsibilities and functions as may be assigned.

Note:

The major tasks and responsibilities outlined above are representative but not all-inclusive. All activities are expected to be performed in a safe manner in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and its Regulations along with Corporate Safety policies, procedures and programs. In addition, all necessary personal protective equipment must be used and maintained in good condition. This position must be compliant with all provisions of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, related to “Duties of a Worker.”

Education/Experience/Skill

Qualifications

  • Ontario Secondary School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Must be enrolled in a Post-Secondary School Program, preferably in the civil engineering science or technology field.

Experience

  • Demonstrated experience with operating small equipment and/or construction experience is considered an asset.

Knowledge/Skill/Abilities

  • Must be willing and capable to learn and follow traffic control plans and road maintenance procedures.
  • Ability to operate a variety of small equipment safely and efficiently.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Must be able to follow instructions and work safely and independently or in a group.
