Senior Lifeguard - Summer

POSITION

PURPOSE:

Under the general supervision of the Manager of Recreation Facilities & Programs and the technical direction and guidance of the Aquatic Supervisor and the Program Coordinator, provides swimming instruction to program registrants and serves as lifeguard during public recreational swimming.

The Senior Lifeguard maintains and ensures compliance with high safety standards of the aquatic facility at all times. The position oversees the effective delivery of scheduled programs. Provides functional direction and guidance to Junior Lifeguards while maintaining open lines of communication with patrons, staff and the Aquatic Supervisor.

The Senior Lifeguard will perform all activities in a safe manner, in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and its Regulations, along with Corporate Safety policies, procedures and programs. In addition, all necessary personal protective equipment must be used and maintained in good condition.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND

ACCOUNTABILITIES :
Program Support and Implementation (65%)
  • Instructs all ages and levels of program registrants.
  • Supervises children and adults while lifeguarding during public swimming.
  • Assists in the minor maintenance, cleanliness and organization at the pool.
  • Assists in the registration process prior to the session’s start dates.
  • Assists and participates with the organization and running of special events and theme days.
  • Participates, as required, in departmental functions and activities.
  • Assists in delivering planned, well-balanced, effective programming adapting to abilities, learning styles and different mobility.
  • Acts as team leader and ensures that all aquatic staff are organized and prepared for programs.
  • Provides functional direction and guidance to junior lifeguards and aquatic attendants.
  • Assists the Aquatic Supervisor with new staff orientation, training and evaluation, as required.
  • Ensures protocols are followed and assist to maintain the cleanliness and disinfection of the aquatic facility, pool, change rooms, washrooms including spilled bodily fluids from accidents or injuries.
  • Responsible for deck supervision duties and ensures that the facility is safe to open and remain open for patrons.
  • Always maintains a high standard of safety supervision.
  • With the Aquatic Supervisor, ensures compliance with City and departmental guidelines, policies and procedures as outlined.
  • Performs other duties, responsibilities and functions as assigned.
Health and Safety (15%)
  • Works in compliance with the provisions of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, the regulations and City policies.
  • Must use or wear the required personal protective equipment, protective devices or clothing that the City requires to be used or worn.
  • Reports to Supervisor, the absence or defect in any equipment or protective device of which the worker is aware and which may endanger themselves or another worker.
  • Reports to Supervisor, any contravention of the Act, regulations or the existence of any hazard of which they are aware.
  • Ensures there is always sufficient aquatic staff on deck.
  • Remains alert and available to respond to any aquatic emergencies.
  • Continually monitors patron’s conduct for behavioral concerns, potential accidents and other potential hazards.
  • During an emergency, ensures the safety of all patrons and aquatic staff is a priority including emergency response, evacuations and water rescue.
  • Ensures compliance with the Ontario public pools regulation. If the aquatic facility is not in compliance, the Senior Lifeguard is responsible for closing the facility and reporting the status to the Aquatic Supervisor.
  • Provides effective emergency response, executing proper rescue techniques and providing first aid within the scope of their training. Liaison with appropriate Emergency Services Personnel (EMS, Police, Fire) to ensure effective transfer of care as dictated by the situation.
