HVAC Tech / Heating Engineer, Building Maintenance, Maintenance Technician / Mechanic
We are seeking an experienced, hands‑on Chief Engineer to lead the Engineering Department and ensure the smooth operation, safety, and functionality of all hotel facilities This person is accountable for ensuring all engineering/maintenance operations, building, grounds, mechanical equipment, guestrooms and utility systems are maintained in excellent condition. They will also be responsible for maintaining the maintenance budget, preventative maintenance and energy conservation.
This position is part of the senior management team and will be a department head. The ideal candidate has a strong technical background, proven leadership skills, and a commitment to delivering exceptional hospitality standards.
ACTIVITIES:
The duties and responsibilities for the Chief Engineer include, but are not limited to the following:
- Oversee the Engineering/Maintenance department, including scheduling, training and performance evaluation
- Develop, implement and maintain preventative maintenance programs for all hotel systems and equipment
- Maintain and Oversee Budget by following Accounting PO System procedures
- Ensure departmental compliance with hotel policies, SOPs, and safety regulations
- Manage vendor relationships and coordinate external maintenance services
- Supervises and assists maintenance staff/contractors in the maintenance and repair of plumbing, hotel rooms, A/C and heating, ice machines, swimming pool, lighting, kitchen equipment, refrigeration, laundry, emergency generators, switch rooms, etc.
- Ensures all maintenance and repairs are completed on a timely, cost-effective basis and according to specifications.
- Available to take after hour calls for building emergencies
- Orders necessary materials and tools for repairing equipment and keeps within budgetary guidelines.
- Responsible for administering and documenting equipment preventative maintenance and guest room preventative maintenance.
- Responsible for the safety of the department and the building.
- Responds quickly to guest requests in a friendly manner. Follows up to ensure guest satisfaction.
- Provides a professional image at all times through appearance and dress.
- Follows company policies and procedures and is able to effectively communicate them to subordinates.
- Aggressively recruits and staffs department using company hiring standards (i.e. behavioral questioning, reference checks, evaluations and team interviews). Reviews performances and assists in career development.
- Conducts fire drills, training classes regarding safety, security, department procedures and service guidelines.
- Ensures hotel is in compliance with all federal, provincial and local laws, including Health and Safety, ESA, Human Rights etc.
- Ensures all fire and safety inspections are completed and any discrepancies are corrected.
- Perform/ensure annual inspections of all safety equipment conducted. Conduct regular (at least annually) fire drills.
- Maintain copies of all fire inspection reports, both from insurers and fire marshals.
- Maintain a list of primary contractors used in all phases of original hotel construction (plumber, electrician, etc.), as well as those used for any subsequent renovations or repairs.
- During major renovations and construction work, the Chief Engineer will be responsible for controlling the activities of the Contractors and enforcing safe work practices.
- Personal vehicle to travel locally or to other locations is a primary job duty

COMPETENCIES WE ARE SEEKING
- 3 plus years progressive maintenance engineering in a managerial role
- Strong computer skills including proficiency in Microsoft Office and ability to quickly learn specialized software.
- Guest oriented and service minded with an attention to detail

- Working knowledge of electrical and mechanical systems
- Effective communication and people management skills
- Quick thinking and able to spot and resolve problems efficiently
- Ability to manage personnel and meet financial targets

- Will be required to work mornings, evenings, weekends, and holidays.
- Will be required to work in fast paced, stressful environment
A reasonable estimate of the current range is $60,000 to $75,000 (salary + performance‑based bonus for eligible positions). The pay range for this position takes into account multiple factors that are considered in making compensation decisions including but not limited to skill sets; experience and training; education and certifications, work location and other business and organizational needs. You may also be eligible to participate in a discretionary annual incentive program, subject to the rules governing the program, whereby an award, if any, depends on various factors, including, without limitation, individual and organizational performance.
