Under the general supervision of the Manager of Pollution Control and technical guidance and direction of the Chief Wastewater Treatment Operator assists with yard maintenance and cleaning, routine inspections, maintenance, and repair of treatment works, devices, equipment, and appurtenances necessary for the operation of the City’s wastewater treatment plant and pumping stations.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities- Assist with maintaining grounds in an orderly state by trimming grass and shrubbery, operating, and maintaining all grounds keeping equipment, such as tractors, trucks, mowers, etc.
- Operate vehicles and equipment within established operating procedures in order to ensure that all applicable guidelines, procedures, regulations are complied with.
- Assist with the collection of samples from various processes at the Treatment Plant, as directed.
- Assist with recording performance monitoring data, as directed.
Assist with inspecting, cleaning, maintaining, adjusting, and repairing plant equipment as required in accordance with prescribed standards. - Maintain the facility, tools, and equipment in a clean and orderly state.
- Assist with the monitoring of facility and associated pump stations as directed to ensure the efficient operation of the facilities.
- Participate in training/seminars as required by the Supervisor and/or Manager.
- Complete and maintain associated departmental paperwork, as required.
- Perform other such related duties, responsibilities and functions as may be assigned.
Note:
The major tasks and responsibilities outlined above are representative but not all-inclusive. All activities are expected to be performed in a safe manner in accordance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and its Regulations along with Corporate Safety policies, procedures and programs. In addition, all necessary personal protective equipment must be used and maintained in good condition. This position must be compliant with all provisions of the Occupational Health and Safety Act, related to “Duties of a Worker.”
Qualifications
Ontario Secondary School Graduation Diploma or equivalent
Must be registered full-time in an accredited Post Secondary School Program preferably in the Environmental Science or Technology field.
Demonstrated experience in yard maintenance, environmental science, mechanical and/or electrical trades is considered an asset.
Knowledge/Skill/Abilities- Must be willing and capable to learn Systems Control and Data Acquisition (SCADA) and Alarm Dialer Systems.
- Proficiency in various computer programs (ie. Microsoft Office).
- Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
- Must be able to follow instructions and work safely independently or in a group to complete tasks.
- Ability to complete forms, schedules, checklists, reports and maintain accurate records.
- Ability to use yard maintenance equipment as well as hand tools.
- Must have the ability to work well with supervisors, co-workers, and the general public.
Ontario Driver’s Abstract required
Must possess a valid “G” Ontario Driver’s Licence and access to reliable transportation

- Must have physical dexterity and the ability to work in noisy and/or unsanitary environments.
