Current vacancy:
Licensed Vocational Nurse position for 6.0 hours per day / 208 work day calendar.
- Under the direction of the Director of Special Education and oversight by a credentialed school nurse, provide a variety of health services to students and personnel including first aid, screening of ill or injured students and emergency care; serve as a technical resource on health services, issues, problems and related information; provide mandated screening, testing, immunization and record-keeping services; meet individual health needs of students and provide nursing care described in individualized health care plans.
- Dispense prescribed medication as ordered by a physician following district policies, the Nurse Practice Act and other state/federal regulations; monitor for reactions; prepare documents to record medications.
- Establish, prepare and maintain cumulative health and immunization records and confidential files; prepare periodic and special reports; complete accident reports; screen records for CHDP compliance; review immunization data; notify parents or appropriate personnel of needed immunizations and other medical issues.
- Assist credentialed school nurse in mandated screening programs; follow up on students with vision, hearing, dental needs, scoliosis, or other health issues; update information related to screenings.
- Monitor and provide specialized health care procedures including sterile and clean urinary catheterizations, blood sugar monitoring, oral and tracheotomy suctioning, care of ostomies, nasogastric and gastrostomy tube care for students with chronic illnesses and Epi Pen administration for anaphylactic reactions.
- Provide emergency care as needed (e.g., cardiopulmonary distress, respiratory distress, insulin reactions, hypoglycemia, seizures, anaphylactic shock) and assess safety; refer for proper treatment and comply with legal requirements under the direction of the credentialed school nurse.
- Provide care for students’ diabetic needs, perform blood sugar checks, administer medications, and communicate with parents, RN and doctor as needed.
- Operate a variety of medical instruments and equipment; assist with health room maintenance and related activities.
Education and Experience: Any combination equivalent to: graduation from high school supplemented by college-level coursework in nursing, health care or a related field and two years of health care experience.
- Licenses and Other Requirements: Valid First Aid and CPR Certificate; valid California LPN, LVN or RN license/certificate; valid driver’s license and evidence of insurability.
- Knowledge of health office practices, procedures, and equipment; health and safety regulations; first aid and CPR methods; sterile techniques; medical procedures for special health care needs; anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology; applicable laws and regulations; operation of medical equipment; public health resources; effective communication and interpersonal skills; record-keeping and report preparation; and public speaking.
- Ability to: Provide health services to students and staff; act as a resource on health issues; prepare and maintain health records; screen for health concerns; comply with health regulations; use specialized medical equipment; interpret and apply rules and procedures; perform advanced health care procedures; compile data and reports; communicate effectively; establish cooperative relationships; work independently.
