Job Summary
The Nurse Practitioner-Xpand Role practices in a Magnet recognized tertiary academic medical center with Level One Trauma Designation, Comprehensive Stroke Center Certification and ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarction (STEMI) Receiving Center designation. The role is performed in collaboration with the supervising physician and includes overlapping medical/surgical procedures for specialty populations of patients with critical acuity, and participation in service coverage needs 24 hours per day, 7 days per week.
Responsibilities include providing age‑specific and developmentally appropriate medical management and coordination of patient care consistent with educational preparation and designated standardized procedures. The NP performs complete physical examinations, orders, interprets and evaluates diagnostic tests, and documents subjective and objective data in the electronic medical record per established policies and procedures. Patient, family, and/or caregiver are kept informed regarding the plan of care, including hospital course, post‑operative plan, expected outcomes, and follow‑up care.
The NP encourages patients and families to ask questions and be active participants, demonstrates a commitment to excellence and customer expectations, and models the institutional values of empowerment and professional governance of nursing practice. The role serves as a preceptor for students, facilitates a meaningful learning experience, and represents the nursing profession’s readiness to embrace new knowledge, innovations, and practice improvements to enhance patient outcomes.
The NP supports and inspires nursing excellence and maintains Magnet Recognition, demonstrates in‑depth knowledge of regulatory standards, ensures compliance, and maintains survey‑readiness at all times. Practice occurs within the NP scope of practice pursuant to standardized procedures, following state and federal regulations. Additional duties may be assigned as needed.
Master of Science Degree in Nursing or Doctorate of Nursing Practice (DNP) with completion of NP curriculum required. If hired as an NP prior to 2005 then a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing is acceptable. Minimum three years of experience as a registered nurse in an acute care setting or in a sub‑specialty clinic environment is required. Minimum one year of experience in the NP specialty area is preferred.
Knowledgeand Skills
Must have in‑depth knowledge of advanced practice nursing, clinical pathways, research, evidence‑based practice, healthcare quality, patient safety, performance improvement, regulatory standards, medical staff structure, healthcare law and finance, peer review, and legal aspects of care. The NP must be able to demonstrate excellence in bedside practice, professionalism, apply theoretical concepts to clinical practice, and continuously expand knowledge and clinical skills in the area(s) of specialty.
Able to read, write legibly, communicate in English (Spanish preferred) with professional quality, use computer, printer and software programs (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint), troubleshoot and calibrate patient care equipment, perform technical patient care activities, relate and communicate positively, be assertive and consistent in following policies, lead, supervise, teach and collaborate, accept direction, think critically, work independently with minimal supervision, perform basic math and statistical functions, compose written material, manage multiple assignments effectively, organize and prioritize workload, work well under pressure, problem‑solve, recall information accurately, pay close attention to detail, distinguish colors and smells as necessary for patient care, hear sufficiently for general conversation, identify and distinguish various sounds associated with the workplace and patient care, see adequately to read computer screens and written documents, and discern temperature variances through touch.
Licensuresand Certifications
Active California Registered Nurse (RN) license and California Nurse Practitioner Certificate required (certification pending/in process acceptable). If hired after February 2021, national certification is required. Basic Life Support (BLS) certification issued by the American Heart Association is required.
