Overview
The Patient Navigator-Cancer coordinates access of patients through the healthcare system from diagnosis or point of referral. Completes authorization and coordinates financial clearance. Collects needed patient information for appointments, treatments, procedures, and surgeries including diagnostic procedures, pathology reports, operative notes, radiation therapy and chemotherapy information. Functions as a liaison between patients, families, outpatient oncology clinics, primary care physicians, and other support services.
Provides patient service excellence through timely, accurate, caring and supportive communications with the patient through all aspects of care. Demonstrates flexibility and willingly floats to other areas as assigned. Performs other duties as needed.

The Patient Navigator-Cancer coordinates access for patients, completes authorization and financial clearance, collects information for appointments and procedures, and serves as a liaison among patients, families, outpatient clinics, physicians and support services.

High School Diploma or GED required. Minimum one year of experience in a medical office setting required.
Knowledge and Skills- Knowledge of medical terminology required.
- Knowledge of all medical insurances and how they are used in a hospital/clinical facility.
- Full knowledge of ICD-9 and CPT codes and their use in HMO authorizations.
- Experience in both in-patient and out-patient settings preferred.
- Typing speed of 50 wpm; data entry/editing; proficiency with Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook.
- Ability to use office equipment; effective communication, especially on the telephone and with individuals of differing levels of comprehension (Spanish preferred).
- Resourceful, adaptable to changing circumstances; maintains patient confidentiality and a positive, supportive attitude.
- Ability to collate information for case reports and databases; interpret patient records and various reports; critical thinking, problem-solving and decision-making under pressure.
- Organize and prioritize workload; multi-task; recall information with accuracy; perform basic math; assess, evaluate and analyze data; communicate synthesis of information.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Able to distinguish colors; read/hear/speak for general conversation; read computer screens and documents related to the role.
