SummaryThis position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP) – a student loan reimbursement program. Candidates must meet specific eligibility requirements per VHA policy and submit an EDRP application within four months of appointment. Program approval awards up to $200,000 over 1–5 years as determined by VHA Education Loan Repayment Services. Former EDRP participants ineligible to apply.
QualificationsTo qualify for this position you must meet the basic requirements (listed below) and any additional requirements specified in the job announcement. Applicants pending completion of training or license requirements may be referred and tentatively selected, but may not be hired until all requirements are met. Currently employed physicians in VA who met the previous qualification standard at the time of their initial appointment are deemed to have met the basic requirements.
- United States citizenship. Non‑citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA policy.
- Doctor of Medicine or equivalent osteopathic medicine degree from a VA‑approved school.
- Current, full and unrestricted license to practice medicine or surgery in a state, territory, or the District of Columbia.
- Residency training: physicians must have completed residency training approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs in an accredited core specialty training program leading to eligibility for board certification.
- For physicians with academic training programs, board certification may be required for faculty status.
- Approved residencies include: (1) ACGME‑accredited programs; (2) AOA‑accredited programs; or (3) other non‑US residency programs followed by a minimum of five years of verified U.S. practice as deemed appropriate by the local Medical Staff Executive Committee.
- Physicians currently enrolled in ACGME/AOA‑accredited residency programs who otherwise meet the basic requirements are eligible to be appointed as Physician Resident Providers (PRPs).
- PRPs must be fully licensed physicians (not training license) and may only be appointed on an intermittent or fee basis. They are not independent practitioners and will not be privileged. Their scope of practice allows them to perform certain restricted duties under supervision.
- Physician surgeons in gap years may also be appointed as PRPs.
- Proficiency in spoken and written English.
- Preferred experience:
clinical neurophysiology (EMG‑NCV, EEG), injections (botox for migraine, dystonia, nerve blocks). - Physical requirements:
pass a pre‑employment physical examination (VA Handbook 5019). Must be able to lift 15–44 lbs, carry 15 lbs, reach above shoulder, use fingers with both hands, walk and stand up to 2 hours, kneel up to 1 hour, rapid mental & muscular coordination, near vision 13–16", far vision 20/20 in one eye and 20/40 in the other, depth perception, color distinction, hearing (aid permitted), emotional & mental stability, able to work closely with others and alone.
