Overview

Incumbents in the Carpenter Journeyman position perform general carpentry work, including the maintenance, repair, and construction of various structures on the USU Housing Facilities. Incumbents apply Journeyman level skills, technical knowledge, and following established guidelines to accomplish assigned tasks.

Responsibilities
  • Repairs and maintains a myriad of structural parts, including floors, windows, ceilings, roofs, walls, partitions, stairways, etc.
  • Performs duties associated with a variety of new construction and remodeling, including insulation, cabinets, shelves, wood or metal frame walls, suspended ceilings, roofing, masonry, concrete work, etc.
  • Performs finish work, including trimming, fitting and installing windows and doors, paneling, attaching hinges and catches, laying laminate and ceramic tile counters, etc.
  • Ensures proper care in the use and maintenance of equipment and supplies.
  • Promotes continuous improvement of workplace safety and environmental practices.
  • Cleans equipment, shop area, and work site.
  • Performs customer service duties, including contacting customers and following up to ensure that expectations were met.
  • Completes trainings, as warranted, to stay current with the trade.
  • Performs miscellaneous job-related duties as assigned.
Qualifications

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Four years directly related work experience in carpentry trade.
  • Valid driver’s license to perform essential job responsibilities, such as driving university vehicles and transporting materials

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Skilled in repair, maintenance, and construction techniques common to the carpentry trade.
  • Skilled in estimating time and material requirements for assigned projects.
  • Ability to work without supervision.
  • Knowledge of applicable codes, standards, and regulations.
  • Ability to read specifications from blueprints and schematic drawings.
  • Ability to build to specifications from blueprints and schematic drawings.
  • Skilled in use of various hand and power tools common to trade.
  • Basic computer skills.
  • Skilled at troubleshooting.
  • Customer service skills.

Advertised Salary

Minimum $48,000;
Commensurate with experience ADA

The position requires considerable physical activity. Employees must have sufficient strength to perform the duties and responsibilities of the position including heavy lifting and/or pushing and pulling of heavy objects. Employees must be prepared to assume uncomfortable positions such as crawling, kneeling, and squatting. Additionally, the work environment can include confined or narrow spaces. Employees must adhere to safety precautions and may be required to use protective equipment.
