Job Description & How to Apply Below

The Shelter Coordinator is responsible for the daily management and operational stability of CAPSA's Emergency Shelter, including leadership of the After-Hours team. This role requires initiative; the person in this position notices what needs attention, acts without waiting for direction, and takes ownership of outcomes. They set the operational tone of the shelter through sound decision‑making, clear expectations, and consistent follow‑through.

Beyond logistics and supervision, this role helps create a welcoming, home‑like environment for survivors and their children. That means being present, engaged, and willing to step in, whether responding to crisis, restocking the pantry, preparing rooms, or interacting with families.

Core Responsibilities

The Shelter Coordinator owns the daily flow of shelter operations, monitoring capacity, coordinating room assignments, supporting emergent client needs, and ensuring that shelter guidelines and emergency procedures are consistently upheld. The Coordinator conducts house meetings, reinforces expectations in a trauma‑informed manner, and works closely with case managers and advocates to maintain continuity of care. Initiative is central to this role: when the pantry is running low it is restocked;

when clients ask for something the Coordinator responds in the moment when possible; when children are restless the Coordinator engages rather than observing from a distance. The Coordinator leads the After‑Hours Advocates by managing schedules, ensuring 24‑hour shelter coverage, reviewing documentation and timesheets, supporting development, and addressing performance concerns when necessary. Operational ownership also includes maintaining organized systems for food, bedding, and essential supplies, coordinating grocery shopping and community partnerships, ensuring rooms are cleaned and prepared for new arrivals, and monitoring facility needs in collaboration with the Facilities Director.

Accurate documentation, monthly reporting, and transparent communication with the Shelter Director are required. The Coordinator identifies gaps, proposes solutions, and improves systems rather than simply maintaining them.

Who Thrives In This Role
  • Takes initiative rather than waiting for direction
  • Has experience working in crisis environments, residential programs, shelter services, advocacy, social work, or similar human services settings
  • Has supervised, coordinated, or informally led others and is comfortable holding clear boundaries
  • Can stay steady and make sound decisions during high‑stress situations
  • Balances empathy with structure in a shared living environment
  • Follows through on documentation, reporting, and operational details
  • Communicates clearly and directly, especially when addressing safety or performance concerns

A degree in a related field is valued but not required. Demonstrated experience managing crisis situations, supporting teams, and maintaining accountability is more important than credentials alone.
