- Typical assignments include:
Enforcing customs, immigration, and agriculture laws and regulations. - Facilitating the flow of legitimate trade and travel.
- Conducting inspections of individuals and conveyances.
- Determining the admissibility of individuals for entry into the United States.
- Preventing the illegal entry of individuals and prohibited goods and the smuggling of illegal drugs and other contraband.
You will be asked to provide your preference for one of the following mission-critical locations. Incentives are available for some locations. If a duty location does not have vacancies at the time of final offer, you may be offered a duty location in another geographic location within the United States. Locations offered are based on operational and mission requirements and critical agency hiring needs for entry-level CBPOs as determined by the CBP Office of Field Operations (OFO).

Salary, Recruitment Incentives, and Benefits:
Newly appointed CBPOs may be offered incentives and base pay as described below.
- Incentive:
Up to $15,000 per year for a three-year service contract in specified locations (GS-5 level and above). - Incentive:
Up to $15,000 per year for a four-year service contract in specified locations (GS-5 level and above). - Annual base salary varies: GS-5 and GS-7 range from $40,332 to $109,952 per year; locality pay varies by duty location.
- A fully trained CBPO may be eligible for up to $45,000 in overtime pay in addition to starting salary.
- Grade progression: GS-5, GS-7, GS-9, GS-11, GS-12 with promotion to next grade after 52 weeks in each grade ( Promotions at agency discretion).
- Benefits include health and dental insurance, generous annual and sick leave, and participation in the Thrift Savings Plan.
You qualify for the GS-5 grade level if you possess one of the following:
- Experience:
A minimum of three (3) years of full-time general work experience - Education Substitution: A bachelor s degree or successful completion of a full four-year course of study
- Combination:
Education and experience combination, as documented in resume and transcripts
You qualify for the GS-7 grade level if you possess one of the following:
- Experience:
At least one year of specialized work experience comparable to the next lower grade level, including physical inspections for criminal activity and applying laws and regulations - Education Substitution: A bachelor s degree with Superior Academic Achievement or one year of graduate education
- Combination:
Specialized experience plus graduate education
