The Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) – Surgery provides direct perioperative and intraoperative care under the supervision of a Registered Nurse (RN). The LPN supports the surgical team by preparing surgical instruments and supplies, assisting with procedures, maintaining a sterile environment, and ensuring patient safety throughout surgical interventions. This role is integral to the success of the surgical unit and demands technical proficiency, strong communication, and a commitment to high-quality patient care.
EssentialFunctions
- Assist surgeons and RNs during operative procedures by handing instruments and maintaining aseptic technique
- Prepare and maintain a sterile surgical field and ensure equipment functionality
- Account for surgical instruments and sponges before, during, and after procedures
- Monitor patient conditions and report changes to the surgical team
- Prepare patients for surgery and assist with preoperative and postoperative care
- Assist with documentation of patient information and procedures
- Decontaminate, assemble, and sterilize surgical instruments and equipment
- Handle surgical specimens for delivery to pathology
- Adhere to infection control and patient safety standards
- Collaborate with team members to ensure smooth operation of the surgical unit
- Knowledge of surgical procedures, instruments, and aseptic techniques
- Ability to remain calm and organized under pressure
- Basic computer and documentation skills
- Strong attention to detail and safety compliance
- Good physical stamina to stand for extended periods and assist with patient transfer
- Clear verbal communication and respectful interaction with the surgical team and patients
- Demonstrated ability to follow established hospital protocols and support quality improvement initiatives
- Graduate of an accredited practical/vocational nursing program
- Current LPN license in state of practice or Compact State License (if applicable)
- Basic Life Support (BLS) certification (required upon hire)
- Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) – within time frame specified in facility policy
- Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) – within time frame specified in facility policy
- Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) – within time frame specified in facility policy
- Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) or Handle with Care – within time frame specified in facility policy
- IV Therapy Certification Course – within time frame specified in facility policy
- Minimum of six months’ experience in an acute care or surgical setting preferred
