Overview

The post-holder will deliver and contribute to the development of the maternal medicine service, working both as an autonomous practitioner and team member, delivering high quality, expert nursing care.

Main

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Undertake nurse-led outpatient maternal medicine clinics as an independent practitioner, working to agreed guidelines and protocols within a clinical governance framework (e.g Haematology/Hypertension).
  • Accepting referrals, determine appropriateness and prioritise according to clinical need, seeing both new and follow-up patients in accordance with local protocols and national guidelines.
  • Carrying out specific investigations, treatments and interventions without direct supervision including:
    • Primary assessment and treatment of a suspected VTE
    • Assessment of a woman with Hypertension, considering the diagnosis of Pre-eclampsia and eclampsia
  • Provide support to LUHFT by increasing the outreach team to include 2 virtual ward rounds a week for patients admitted to LUHFT (and when necessary to assist in the review, escalation and management of these patients).
  • Provide leadership and support to relevant staff within specialist area of competence across Liverpool University Hospitals Group and the wider North-West maternal medicine network.
  • Requesting diagnostic tests as appropriate within agreed sphere of competence.
  • Interpret results and develop programmes of care as appropriate.
  • Provide telephone advisory service to patients within agreed boundaries of competence.
  • Managing and co-ordinating own caseload of patients.
  • Provide psychological support at diagnosis and throughout the patient journey, acting as the patient’s advocate.
  • Proactively and independently refer patients to other disciplines when relevant, in accordance with local protocols and national guidelines.
  • Be a key member of the MDT and work collaboratively with the maternal medicine team to support best possible patient outcomes.
  • Act as a specialist resource for patients, ensuring they have a full understanding of their conditions, and interpreting complex information to ensure they are fully informed and supported in the decision making process.
  • Provide support, education and specialist advice to patients, carers and families.
  • Contribute to the development of patient information leaflets, protocols, standards and guidelines.
  • Undertake and participate in audits as required.
  • Assist in the formulation of policies and protocols.
  • Sharing information and introducing ideas to help promote quality and effectiveness of the department. Encourage new evidence based approaches to practice and act as a change agent.
  • Contribute formally and informally to education, training and development of nursing staff and other professional groups.
  • Ensure that the environment of care is safe and appropriately equipped, and compliant with standards of hygiene, cleanliness and safety.
  • Ensure that all appropriate documentation is completed fully, accurately and legibly.
