Overview

An opportunity has arisen within our busy Regional Urology Diagnostics and Outpatients departments based in Outpatients 3 and Ward 13 at Royal Liverpool and Aintree sites of Liverpool University Hospitals for several enthusiastic, motivated, flexible and hardworking HCA Band 3 staff.

The successful candidates will be expected to join our busy team to provide a service to all Urology patients including escorting them through the diagnostic process, the use of diagnostic equipment, assisting with diagnostic procedures, such as Flexible cystoscopy, use of diathermy equipment and biopsies. Perform flow rate and residual scanning, assist the throughput of clinic, with General and oncology patients and act as a support to the medical and Nursing team with general HCA duties.

Responsibilities
  • Assisting Consultant and Nursing staff in performing diagnostic procedures including transperinal biopsy, Transurethral Laser Ablation, Botox, Stent removal, dilatation, diathermy flexible cystoscopy.
  • Setting up environment, assisting with equipment, assisting with safe collection and transporting Biopsies pre and post procedure.
  • Assisting with clinical duties performing Urinalysis and Uroflow and bladder scanning.
  • Ordering of equipment specific to Unit needs.
  • Assisting patients with positioning ensuring patient safety and comfort at all times. Ensure Loccsip is adhered to pre and post procedures.
  • Undertake chaperoning and escorting patients in clinical department, within the hospital and to other hospitals for investigations.
  • General and clinical observations of patients, reporting anything untoward to Registered Nursing Staff, including:
    • Recording of blood pressure, pulse, temperature and respiration rate
    • Oxygen saturation monitoring
    • Recording of peak flow
  • Undertake blood glucose monitoring and venepuncture upon the direction of the registered nurse.
  • Documentation in patients nursing records of any care given.
  • Initiate Basic Life Support techniques as appropriate and provide assistance to the registered nurse as required in prolonged resuscitation situations.
  • Contribute to the development of Essence of Care and benchmarking.
  • Ensure due regard is given to customs, values and spiritual beliefs of patients and carers.
  • Promotes effective communication within the multi-disciplinary team and takes measures to overcome communication difficulties.
  • Contributes to the management of aggressive and abusive behaviour.
  • Prepare used linen bags for collection by Porters and ensure adequate supply of linen bags/skips ready for use.
  • Assist in maintaining a clean and safe environment in all areas.
  • Safe disposal of clinical waste and sharps as per Trust policy.
  • Be familiar with Trust policy and procedure for reporting clinical incidents, reporting of incidents if they occur.
  • Attend to the needs of visitors and patients particularly those who may be distressed or bereaved.
  • Care for patients property, including valuables, in accordance with Trust policy.
  • Obtain demographic details and social history from patients/visitors to assist in the admission process.
  • Provide support and assistance to new and junior members of staff.
  • Undertake a range of clerical duties in the absence of or in support of the Ward Clerk to ensure a smooth running service, including:
    • Reception/telephone duties
    • Basic computer skills
    • Obtaining case notes/x-rays
    • Filing
    • Act as messenger to other areas as required
  • Complete maintenance repair forms and monitor stock levels of stationary, ward provisions, clean linen, etc.
  • The post holder shall as necessary provide cover for and undertake duties of absent colleagues.
  • The post holder shall follow all the policies and procedures of the organisation.
  • Attend induction, participate in Training and Development, instruction of less experienced staff, and mandatory in-service training as per Trust policy.
  • Comply with all Trust and Unit policies in relation to all aspects of practice and uphold the reputation of the Trust and the wellbeing of patients and their relatives.
  • Undertake allocated workload under the supervision and direction of a Registered Nurse and identify objectives within a PDP to support high standards of clinical care.
  • Acknowledge limitations of knowledge and clinical skills; seek appropriate advice and support.
Qualifications and requirements
  • Healthcare Assistant Band 3 with a caring nature and ability to work in a fast-paced, progressive environment.
  • Experience with diagnostic procedures and basic clinical duties is desirable.
  • Ability to work as part of a multidisciplinary team and to communicate effectively with patients and staff.
