Job Summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced HCPC registered Biomedical Scientist at Liverpool Clinical Laboratories in Haematology/Transfusion. This service provides 24/7 cover across four separate hospital sites. The post may be offered under Annex 21 AfC Terms & Conditions, subject to experience, competency and suitability. The laboratory based at the new CSSB facility at Royal Liverpool supports the Clatterbridge Cancer Care Hospital Liverpool and regional specialists' services such as the Haemophilia centre and the Haemoglobinopathy and Antenatal Screening Service.
The laboratory at Aintree University Hospital supports the regions Trauma Centre and also serves the Walton Neurological Centre. Broadgreen Hospital, co‑located with Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital NHS Foundation Trust, provides elective surgical, diagnostic and treatment services, together with specialist rehabilitation. The Liverpool Women’s NHS Foundation Trust is the main hospital delivering high standards of care for women, babies, and families.
Duties
- Validate analytical data prior to result reporting and select and provide suitable blood and blood products.
- Train staff and support Senior Biomedical Scientists.
- Support the operational functionality of laboratory areas, including calibrating, maintaining, and operating complex analytical equipment and regularly reviewing internal quality control and external quality assurance data trends.
- Maintain UKAS ISO 15189:2021 and IBMS training laboratory accreditation.
- Rotate across sites to meet varying clinical needs, some requiring autonomous working.
- Assess suitability of samples received, liaising with medical staff.
- Ensure completion and validation of routine and specialist haematology & transfusion analyses.
- Use specialist knowledge to authorise test results and initiate further tests (e.g., Paul Bunnell, haemoglobinopathy, haematinics).
- Ensure data integrity when entering demographics and results into the laboratory information system.
- Report film, malaria diagnosis and select films for referral to Haematologist.
- Finish, check, validate, and authorise colleagues’ work as necessary.
- Check validity and reliability of analytical processes, maintaining satisfactory performance by internal quality control and external quality assessment.
- Promptly refer results exceeding action limits to senior or departmental medical staff, wards, and GPs; perform technical interpretation of complex results.
- Setup and check instrumentation for correct operation, troubleshoot minor faults, report major faults; maintain instrument, QC and reagent logs; monitor consumables and reagents.
- Assume enhanced responsibility in absence of supervisory staff as per rota.
- Select correct blood and blood products, perform antibody identification and patient phenotyping, ensure integrity in line with National Blood Transfusion guidelines.
- Participate in developmental work, perform specialised tests and assist in clinical trials.
- Provide POCT at satellite laboratories and perform bleeding time tests when required.
- Participate in the Trust’s annual joint review process relevant to grade.
- Provide rapid, reliable results service across routine and specialist analyses or referrals.
- Work within the Trust’s rules and procedures.
- Offer guidance on services, refer queries to Haematologist.
- Communicate with staff to resolve critical patient concerns.
- Supervise and instruct trainee and less experienced Biomedical Scientists, laboratory assistants and support staff.
- Continuously improve service provision with developmental work.
- Qualified as an experienced State Registered Biomedical Scientist.
- HCPC registration.
- CPD.
- Significant experience of modern laboratory techniques and good knowledge of current professional issues.
- Specialist Haematology and Transfusion procedures to post‑graduate diploma level or equivalent.
- Knowledge of COSHH legislation, fire regulations, Data Protection Act, postal regulations, Ionising Radiation Rules and Regulations.
