Job Summary

The postholder will be part of an established clinical service delivering intense smoking cessation support to smokers admitted to hospital and community services. Underpinning the service will be the CURE philosophy of Conversation, Understanding, Replacement & Expertise. In order to deliver this effectively, the successful applicant will need excellent communication, motivational and organisational skills and work as part of a smoking cessation team.

The Smokefree Advisors will have their own delegated caseloads, working under agreed clinical pathways and within defined competence. Working under unsupervised guidance, they will be expected to motivate and engage sick smokers, provide individualised patient management plans whilst in hospital, facilitate follow‑up support post‑discharge and ensure effective handover of care to established community services.

Main duties of the job
  • Support inpatients to adopt healthy lifestyles and provide specialist smoking cessation advice.
  • Provide evidence‑based smoking cessation advice within inpatient sites and community settings.
  • Offer support to inpatients accessing stop smoking advice, information, and support.
  • Actively signpost in preparation for patients being discharged to available smoking cessation resources.
  • Provide staff updates and support staff in providing stop smoking support.
  • Work collaboratively with inpatient ward staff to ensure smoking and tobacco related health improvement information is available.
  • Be aware of relevant policies with reference to fire, accident reporting, infection control and health and safety.
  • Establish good relations with all grades of staff to ensure good communication is maintained.
  • Work in a manner that always protects confidentiality.
Staff Smoking Cessation Support
  • Provide confidential smoking cessation support to staff across both hospital sites.
  • Offer drop‑in clinics, virtual consultations, and personalised quit plans.
  • Work with Occupational Health and HR to promote staff wellbeing.
  • Participate in staff health promotion campaigns and events.

Job Responsibilities

Clinical

  • Support patients in adopting the correct smoking cessation medications and behavioural therapy; demonstrate techniques such as effective NRT delivery.
  • Attend to pharmacological treatments available to smokers, their indications, contraindications and cautions.
  • Undertake and document comprehensive inpatient and community smoking assessments, including full smoking history, past quit attempts, use of smoking cessation aids, and current motivation(s) to quit.
  • Deliver a patient‑led treatment plan to manage nicotine addiction and prevent withdrawal symptoms while admitted or in community settings.
  • Monitor effectiveness of treatment programmes and adjust as necessary.
  • Manage administrative duties related to referrals, team activities and clinics on Trust‑approved clinical systems.
  • Act as a resource for smoking cessation knowledge and advice for the MDT.
  • Coordinate with the Communications Department for promotional events.
  • Support Clinical Lead and Team Lead in developing evidence‑based practice through training and education initiatives.
