The Role:Trainee Art Teacher
This is an exceptional opportunity for a highly motivated and talented art graduate to begin their journey into teaching. EdEx is seeking a Trainee Art Teacher to join this thriving Art department immediately, with a clear pathway onto a formal teacher training programme from September.
In the initial phase, the Trainee Art Teacher will work alongside experienced colleagues as a Graduate Mentor, supporting students in lessons and small group sessions. This is an invaluable period of hands‑on learning - offering genuine insight into classroom practice, curriculum design, and the day‑to‑day reality of teaching before formal training begins.
From September, the Trainee Art Teacher will transition onto a permanent contract with the school, employed on the unqualified teacher pay scale, with teacher training fully funded. This is a rare and genuinely exciting opportunity to enter the profession with full financial and professional support behind you.
Role DescriptionDuring the initial mentoring phase, the Trainee Art Teacher will:
- Support class teachers in delivering engaging Art lessons across Key Stages 3 and 4
- Work with small groups and individual students, providing targeted support and feedback
- Assist with the preparation of resources, displays, and classroom materials
- Observe experienced teachers and engage in structured reflective practice
- Support students with coursework, sketchbook development, and exam preparation
- Build positive relationships with students, parents, and colleagues
- Contribute to the wider life of the school, including extra‑curricular activities
- Attend relevant CPD sessions and team meetings as directed
Phase 2:
Trainee Art Teacher (From September)
Upon transition to the teacher training programme, the Trainee Art Teacher will:
- Take on increasing responsibility for planning, delivering, and assessing Art lessons
- Work towards the Teachers' Standards under the guidance of a dedicated mentor
- Design creative, ambitious, and well‑structured schemes of work
- Develop classroom management skills and a confident teaching identity
- Engage fully with the school's professional development programme
- Collaborate with the Art department to contribute fresh ideas and creative energy
- Begin to take on tutor or form group responsibilities as appropriate
- A first‑class honours degree in Fine Art, Illustration, Graphic Design, or a closely related discipline
- Strong A‑level grades demonstrating academic ability and a track record of high achievement
- GCSE English and Mathematics at grade C/4 or above (or equivalent)
- A genuine aspiration to become a qualified Art teacher
- £115 per day during the Graduate Mentor phase
- Permanent contract from September on the unqualified teacher pay scale
- Teacher training fully funded by the school
