Locum Consultant Colorectal and General Surgeon

Overview

Liverpool University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust wishes to appoint a Locum Consultant Colorectal Surgeon with a special interest in laparoscopic colorectal surgery for a fixed period of six months, from April to September 2026. We are seeking a keen and dynamic consultant who will integrate effectively with the existing teams to deliver a first-class service. This is an exciting time for Liverpool University Hospitals, with the opening of a brand-new hospital featuring state-of-the-art facilities.

Applicants must be on, or within six months of entry to, the Specialist Register (CCT) in General Surgery, or hold an equivalent qualification for overseas graduates. Evidence of high technical standards in operative practice, particularly in colorectal surgery, is essential. A higher postgraduate research degree (MS, MD, or equivalent) is desirable but not essential. The successful candidate will join a well-established unit and will be expected to contribute to the ongoing development of future services.

Clinical Commitments: The post will have 1:4 emergency general surgery on-call daytime cover at the Royal site. The successful candidate will be part of the colorectal specialty on-call 1:12, with out-of-hours on-call commitments 1:16 at the Royal site. The colorectal department operates on three sites (Royal, Aintree, and day case surgery at BGH). Weekend on-call for general surgery will be 1:14.

Professional Performance: Maintain professional standards and report concerns about professional performance to the Clinical Lead; if necessary, escalate to the Associate Medical Director.

Applications are invited for a Locum Consultant Colorectal/General Surgeon in the Division of Surgery, with clinical duties at Royal Liverpool and Aintree sites. This is a replacement post within the current Colorectal Unit of ten full-time Colorectal Consultant Surgeons. The role includes a busy Specialist Colorectal practice, Emergency General Surgery rota for RLH site, emergency support for Liverpool Women's Hospital and Liverpool Heart and Chest Hospital, and Day Case Surgery on the BGH site.

The successful applicant will help meet cancer targets through the cancer pathway and may have a significant interest in inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). The unit is a tertiary referral centre for IBD and ACPGBI accredited in the Northwest. Regular access to a Da Vinci Robot for colorectal operations, and a well-established laparoscopic unit with ample kit and experienced surgical assistants, are available for support.

Qualifications (Essential):

• Full GMC registration
• FRCS (Gen Surg) or equivalent, or entry on the GMC specialist register via CCT (proposed CCT date within 6 months of interview), CESR or European Community Rights

Clinical Experience (Essential):

• Clinical training and experience in colorectal surgery equivalent to UK CCST
• Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on a range of problems (emergency and elective)
• Sufficient experience to join general surgery

Desirable:

• Specialist colorectal fellowship or equivalent

Management Experience (Essential):

• Good communication skills with patients, relatives, GPs, colleagues, nursing staff and management
• Ability to organise and manage outpatient and operative priorities

Audit (Essential):

• Evidence of morbidity/mortality audit

Teaching (Essential):

• Experience in teaching doctors in training and undergraduates; operative teaching to ST/CST trainees or equivalent
