Job Summary – x1 Consultant Anaesthetist substantive full time 10PA. The position will primarily be based at Aintree University Hospital with cross-site work at The Royal Liverpool and Broadgreen sites. Interviews will take place towards the end of February 2026 with the job commencing November 2026.
Main dutiesThe job will entail 6 weekly sessions fixed in time with emergency on-call duties based on-call rota is a two-tier 10-week pattern with approximately 6 weeks on-call out of 10 weeks plus one split weekend. The second weekend on-call is resident from 08:00 to 18:00 and non-resident overnight (either Saturday or Sunday).
The successful candidate will have opportunities for lists in orthopaedic and MFU trauma, vascular lists and provision of pre-op services, as well as flexible day-case anaesthesia. Cross-site work with day-case lists at Broadgreen Hospital (BGH) and lists in complex major surgery at the Royal Liverpool site are expected and negotiable.
There is a 1.5 post-absence time allocation (PA) of core SPA time each week for personal development and an expectation of active involvement in departmental meetings and teaching.

The successful candidate is invited to take on a clinical leadership role, actively participating in initiatives to improve the quality of care. The appointee, with colleagues, will contribute to the provision of anaesthetic services and perioperative medicine.
Other duties include administration, attending meetings, and continuing medical education. It is expected that the appointee will participate in the on-call rota (category A 3% supplement).
Essential
Qualifications
- MB ChB or equivalent
- FRCA, MRCP or equivalent
- Full registration with GMC
- Have CCT in Anaesthesia or be expected to attain within 6 months of interview date, or be included on the Specialist register
- Experience and Skills
- High standard of clinical skills and expertise in anaesthesia
- Experience in perioperative management of high-risk patients undergoing complex surgery
- Clinical experience and knowledge (equivalent to higher training) in Orthopaedics
- Clinical experience and knowledge (equivalent to higher training) in Trauma
- Clinical experience and knowledge (equivalent to higher training) in General, urological and gynaecological surgery
- Clinical experience and knowledge (equivalent to higher training) in Vascular surgery
- Clinical experience and knowledge (equivalent to higher training) in Transfer medicine
- Clinical experience and knowledge (equivalent to higher training) in Non-theatre anaesthesia
- ALS training
- Experience of working in a multidisciplinary team
- Desirable
- ATLS training or equivalent
- Expertise in difficult airway management (e.g., Advanced training in Airway Management)
