Pay Range

$118,068 annually. This represents the lowest to highest salary we believe we would pay for this role at the time of posting.

Job Description

LLNL’s Postdoctoral Research Programs provide mentored training to enhance professional skills and research independence for individuals who have recently earned their doctoral degree. We are seeking a Postdoctoral Researcher for the Center for Global Security Research (CGSR), established in 1996 to bridge science & technology experts at the Lab with national security policy communities. CGSR focuses on nuclear matters—strategic deterrence, international stability, arms control, nonproliferation—with additional topics such as regional studies, emerging technologies, energy issues, and biosecurity.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Conduct research and write on politically significant national security topics aligned with CGSR thrust areas.
  • Meet with CGSR mentor at least once a month to review and refine research, discuss progress, and receive guidance.
  • Publish papers in peer‑reviewed journals and/external outlets via CGSR’s publication options.
  • Communicate and present findings to diverse audiences: laboratory, U.S. policymakers, allied officials, academia, think tanks, workshops, and conferences.
  • Lead or contribute to organization and execution of CGSR workshops.
  • Respond promptly to analysis and publication needs of CGSR and LLNL managers.
  • Pursue independent research interests and interact with scientists internally and externally.
  • Collaborate in a multidisciplinary team to accomplish research goals.
  • Complete brief quarterly fellowship reports summarizing research, writing, and presentation activities.
Qualifications
  • PhD in Political Science, International Relations, the physical or life sciences, engineering, regional or area studies, or a related field.
  • Experience researching, analyzing, and writing on one or more of: nuclear deterrence, arms control, nonproliferation, emerging technologies, cybersecurity, biological & chemical security, regional studies, or energy security.
  • Experience conducting independent research, publishing peer‑reviewed literature, and presenting findings via briefings, lectures, or general presentations.
  • Ability to work effectively individually and in a team to achieve timely results.
  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills for collaboration and presentation of technical information.
  • Attention to detail, rigorous logic, and familiarity with advanced analytic tools and methodologies.

Security Clearance

This position requires a DOE Q‑level clearance. If selected, a federal background investigation will be initiated. Q‑level clearance requires U.S. citizenship. All L or Q cleared employees are subject to random drug testing.
