Job DescriptionWe have multiple openings for undergraduate students to join the Cyber and Critical Infrastructure Summer Institute (CSI) and work on topics related to critical infrastructure security and resilience that align with LLNL’s national security missions. The 2026 CSI program runs during the summer with start dates between May 18, 2026, and June 22, 2026, and flexible end dates through September 25, 2026.
CSI is designed to provide selected candidates an opportunity to apply their skills to projects in areas of national importance such as critical infrastructure risk analysis and security, energy infrastructure modernization and resilience, and defense critical infrastructure. The program includes opportunities to participate in professional and technical development activities with lab subject matter experts, network with fellow interns and lab employees, and learn about the breadth of LLNL’s support to U.S. national security.
- Provide technical and/or research support to projects in the areas of critical infrastructure analysis, modeling, and simulation; cybersecurity; and other related fields working with scientists, engineers, and technical staff members.
- Support development, testing, and documentation of Laboratory methodologies and capabilities.
- Participate in research under close supervision in one or more of the following areas, as assigned:
- Risk and/or decision analysis
- Infrastructure modeling and/or simulation
- Threat and/or hazard modeling
- Data analysis
- Open‑source research and analysis
- Systems engineering
- System decomposition
- Operations research and/or optimization
- Artificial intelligence/machine learning
- Perform technical assignments of a basic degree of complexity and provide technical support to scientists in scientific research and development projects.
- Attend relevant on‑site seminars and training classes (at least one per week).
- Present work through presentations and/or poster sessions.
Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications- Must be a continuing college or university student in good standing at an accredited institution pursuing an undergraduate degree in engineering or related fields. Students graduating with a bachelor’s degree in Spring 2026 or starting a graduate degree program in Fall 2026 should apply for the Graduate Intern position.
- Ability to apply basic problem‑solving techniques and/or analytical principles to solve technical problems.
- Demonstrated academic achievement in a scientific or engineering curriculum.
- Effective communication skills and ability to present and communicate concepts and ideas.
- Ability to apply engineering principles to solve technical problems.
- Ability to work in a team environment.
- Demonstrated exposure through coursework or relevant experience to one or more of the following topics:
- Risk and/or decision analysis
- Infrastructure modeling and/or simulation
- Threat and/or hazard modeling
- Data analysis
- Open‑source research and analysis
- Systems engineering
- System decomposition
- Operations research and/or optimization
- GPA of 3.0 or above (desired).
$23.26 – $31.62 hourly. This position is under a step structure. Step placement is determined by your most recent completed academic year.
