Advanced Development Group Leader - Active Clearance Required
We have an opening for a Group Leader of the Advanced Development Group with administrative responsibility for a highly interdisciplinary team of engineers specializing in the design, development, integration, and management of advanced diagnostic systems, software tools, and critical infrastructure for national security applications. The team’s work primarily supports the Strategic Deterrence directorate and spans from experimental support to strategic planning for lab-wide infrastructure and diagnostic capabilities, with a strong focus on innovation, reliability, and cross‑functional collaboration.
PayRange
$182,310 – $277,344 Annually (SEL.
3: $182,310 – $231,180; SEL.
4: $218,700 – $277,344). Salary is based on competencies, experience, and business needs.
- Provide technical, strategic, and administrative leadership for the multidisciplinary team.
- Collaborate with programmatic and NSED management to identify workforce needs; lead recruiting, hiring, training, workload management, and performance and salary management activities.
- Monitor technical progress across all projects to ensure milestones and deliverables are met, and proactively address technical challenges.
- Support career development by identifying training opportunities, facilitating mentorship, and providing feedback.
- Communicate organizational priorities, changes, and opportunities to group staff, and represent the group’s interests to senior management.
- Ensure adherence to Laboratory policies and safety, security, and ethics requirements.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Job Responsibilities (SEL.
4 Level)
- Serve as a subject matter expert at meetings, briefings, design reviews, and committee activities.
- Provide strategic leadership and vision for the group, aligning workforce development with long‑term and emerging programmatic needs.
- Mentor and coach other line managers or emerging leaders.
- Lead or contribute to directorate‑level initiatives focused on organizational improvement, culture, or strategic planning.
- Represent the group and division to senior Laboratory management, external partners, and sponsors.
- Active DOE Q‑level clearance or active Top Secret clearance issued by another U.S. government agency at the time of hire.
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering, computer science, physical sciences, or related technical field (or equivalent experience).
- Advanced knowledge in RF and optical instrumentation, scientific computing for data analysis, timing and firing system design, and execution of field experiments.
- Advanced supervisory, organizational, and interpersonal skills; demonstrated ability to lead multidisciplinary technical teams.
- Proven ability to independently plan, prioritize, execute, and manage multiple complex technical tasks and projects simultaneously.
- Advanced written and verbal communication skills; ability to document, present, and explain technical information to diverse audiences.
4 Level)
- Expert‑level knowledge in RF and optical instrumentation, scientific computing, timing and firing system design, and field experiment execution with national or international reputation for technical excellence.
- Extensive experience leading and developing personnel for technical projects with strategic planning, risk mitigation, and resource allocation responsibilities.
- Expert communication, facilitation, and collaboration skills; ability to influence and negotiate with internal and external stakeholders and represent the group to senior management.
- Extensive track record of successfully mentoring, coaching, and developing staff and fostering a collaborative and inclusive work environment.
- Advanced degree in engineering, computer science, physical sciences, or related technical field.
- Familiarity with institutional, Engineering directorate, and Strategic Deterrence directorate policies and procedures.
- Broad additional experience with other laboratory programs and divisions.
