Library Assistant (Youth Services)

Part‑time, benefitted position (21 hours per week). 50% prorated benefits. Works 4‑5 hours each day, including every other Saturday. The Library is open six days a week.
Responsibilities- Assists patrons in person and by telephone, providing information on library policies and services.
- Operates the computerized circulation system to check in/out materials, monitors overdue items and associated fees, and places holds.
- Searches, catalogs, and maintains library materials using OCLC Connexion, Sierra ILS, and other vendor programs.
- Plans and implements programming for children, such as crafts, storytelling, and book talks.
- Maintains bibliographic records, tracks encumbrances, monitors computer usage, and distributes printed reports and notices.
- Interacts courteously with patrons, vendors, and city departments, promoting positive customer relations.
- Provides direction to library clerks, temporary employees, and volunteers when appropriate.
- Utilizes computer and specialized software for word processing, spreadsheets, databases, and internet applications.
- Prioritizes and schedules work assignments, adapting to changing conditions.
- Copy cataloging and bibliographic editing with OCLC Connexion and Sierra ILS.
- Maintains MARC bibliographic and item records per RDA, Dewey Decimal, and Library of Congress standards.
- Applies subject analysis and assigns call numbers to facilitate user access.
- Collaborates with staff to ensure consistency in cataloging practices.
- Recommends improvements in cataloging processes and workflows.
- Knowledge: Library terminology, computer literacy, familiarity with library automated systems, Internet, Windows OS, Microsoft Office, peripheral equipment, effective communication, supervisory principles, and exceptional customer service.
- Skills: Verbal and written communication; public presentations; patron interaction across age groups; money handling; adaptability; independent judgment within guidelines; data analysis; procedural improvement; computer proficiency; prioritization and scheduling; service attitude.
- Ability to: Apply city policies and procedures; read and interpret written policies; work flexible hours including weekends and evenings; lift and maneuver items up to 50‑60 pounds.
- Experience: Two years in a library or public service setting with customer service and computer skills; supervisory experience desirable.
- Education: Associate degree in library technology or a related field; equivalency by combination of education and experience.
- Training: Recent academic courses or certifications relevant to the role.
- License: Valid California driver’s license with satisfactory driving record (if required).
- Other Requirements: Willingness to work any day, weekend, weeknight, and occasional emergency overtime; attend meetings, workshops, and seminars during work and non‑work hours.
- Special Requirements: Read fine print and computer monitors; converse in person and on telephone; use a computer keyboard; stoop, bend, reach, and stretch; lift and maneuver items weighing up to 50‑60 pounds.
