Shop Assistant

The Mechanic/Shop Assistant for Thorcon will oversee the repair of equipment and coordinate the maintenance of Thorcon’s fleet. They are tasked with equipment inspections, work orders, and monitoring inventory levels.

The Mechanic/Shop Assistant reports to the Shop/Equipment Manager and works closely with the General Superintendent and New Project Expeditor for each task. They manage shop assistants, prioritise tasks, and ensure timely completion.

• Determine equipment repair needs through technical details and schedules
• Execute preventative and breakdown repairs on all Thorcon equipment
• Work in the shop and in the field to perform duties and repairs
• Notify Materials Manager for part and shop supply orders
• Troubleshoot repairs using technical materials and interacting with factory representatives
• Supervise, evaluate, and coach staff on shop duties and time management
• Interface with operations on planning and forecasting preventive maintenance
• Maintain relationships with equipment suppliers and technical support
• Perform maintenance and repairs according to specifications
• Ensure company standard practices and procedures are followed in all shop functions

• Coordinate readiness of equipment according to operational and project priorities
• Resolve problems to speed up equipment readiness
• Inspect equipment upon arrival and departure to ensure correct quality and setup
• Monitor inventory of shop supplies
• Notify Materials Manager of orders when needed, aiming for timely delivery and competitive price
• Maintain a clean and safe shop environment and inspect and clean all shop tools/equipment daily
• Maintain good relationships with suppliers and vendors
• Keep accurate records

• Proven experience as a Mechanic/Shop Assistant or relevant position
• Ability to understand technical specifications of material and equipment
• Proficient in MS Office (especially Excel) and filing systems
• Excellent communication and negotiation skills
• Well‑organized with multitasking abilities
• Strong problem‑solving skills
• High school diploma preferred
• 3+ years of experience in heavy equipment repair or related field
• Ability to lead team members
• Customer service‑oriented
• Knowledgeable of forecasting and repair orders
• Ability to solve problems swiftly
• Excellent organizational and leadership skills

• Turn in daily/weekly/monthly status reports in a timely fashion
• Maintain good relations with clients, colleagues, and vendors
• Take care of all company property as if it were your own (tools, equipment, trucks, etc.)
