Controller

Gavin Heath is partnering with a client in Littleton, CO looking to add a Controller to their team. The role is a Direct Hire position with a hybrid onsite/remote schedule.

The Controller is responsible for leading and managing all accounting operations and financial reporting functions of the organization. This role oversees financial statement preparation, internal controls, compliance, audit coordination, tax oversight, and cash management while serving as a strategic partner to executive leadership. The Controller ensures financial accuracy, regulatory compliance, operational efficiency, and disciplined financial governance across a complex, multi-state, government-focused IT solutions business.

This position requires a strong understanding of GAAP, revenue recognition, inventory and reseller accounting, government contracting considerations, and multi-state sales tax compliance.

Responsibilities Financial Leadership & Reporting
  • Lead and manage the monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes
  • Prepare and oversee accurate GAAP-compliant financial statements
  • Ensure proper revenue recognition across product resale, services, and integration projects
  • Oversee general ledger integrity and chart of accounts structure
  • Develop and deliver executive-level financial reporting and analysis
  • Provide financial insights to support strategic decision‑making
Accounting Operations Oversight
  • Lead and supervise AR, AP, expense management, and general accounting functions
  • Oversee cash flow management, forecasting, and working capital optimization
  • Monitor gross margin performance across product and services lines
  • Ensure proper inventory and cost-of-goods accounting where applicable
  • Identify and implement process improvements to enhance efficiency and internal controls
Tax & Compliance
  • Oversee multi‑state sales tax review, reporting, and filing
  • Lead nexus studies and registration in new states as business expands
  • Ensure compliance with applicable state and federal tax regulations
  • Coordinate with external tax advisors on income tax and compliance matters
  • Maintain strong internal controls to support regulatory and audit requirements
Audit & Controls
  • Lead annual financial audits and serve as primary liaison with external auditors
  • Strengthen and maintain internal control frameworks
  • Ensure compliance with GAAP and other applicable reporting standards
  • Support any government‑related reporting requirements as applicable
Budgeting & Forecasting
  • Lead annual budgeting and rolling forecast processes
  • Partner with department leaders to evaluate spending and margin targets
  • Monitor financial performance against budget and provide variance analysis
Strategic Partnership
  • Serve as financial advisor to executive leadership
  • Support growth initiatives, vendor negotiations, and strategic investments
  • Evaluate financial risk related to contracts, pricing, and vendor terms
  • Assist in long‑term financial planning and scalability initiatives
Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance required
  • 8+ years of progressive accounting experience
  • Prior Controller or Assistant Controller experience preferred
  • Strong knowledge of GAAP accounting principles
  • Experience in value‑added reseller (VAR), distribution, technology, or government contracting environments preferred
  • Experience with multi‑state sales tax compliance and nexus management
  • Experience leading annual audits
  • ERP experience required (Business Central preferred)
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills
  • Strong financial leadership and decision‑making ability
  • High attention to detail and accuracy
  • Ability to operate both strategically and hands‑on
  • Strong analytical and problem‑solving skills
  • Ability to manage confidential financial information
  • Excellent organizational and time‑management skills
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
