Responsibilities
  • Drive a tractor/trailer to move supplies and/or heavy equipment over state highways.
  • Operate tractor/trailer vehicle.
  • Load and unload equipment and supplies.
  • Perform preventive maintenance servicing of assigned vehicle.
  • Work as a member of a crew performing various duties as needed.
  • Perform cleanup duties.
  • May provide CDL training to new employees.
Minimum Requirements

Education and Experience
:
Equivalent to a high‑school diploma. Proficient in operation of a standard transmission vehicle and experience operating tractor/trailer equipment.

Knowledge,

Skills and Abilities

:
Ability to safely operate tractor/trailer equipment and heavy equipment; load and unload heavy equipment and supplies (bags of sand, salt, glass beads, paint drums); demonstrated understanding of load securement; read, speak and understand English sufficiently for public interaction, traffic signs, official inquiries and record entries; train other employees for commercial driver’s license testing; thorough familiarity with all state highway routes.

Physical Requirements
:
Ability to climb, stand and walk for extended periods; follow instructions; lift and carry 50 pounds with or without reasonable accommodation.

Working Conditions
:
Work outdoors in all types of weather conditions.

Licenses, Registrations and Certifications

Valid Class A commercial driver’s license with tanker (“N”) endorsement and no “O” or “E” restrictions on the CDL (or must have these restrictions removed within 30 calendar days of hire or promotion to this position).

During the 30‑day grace period the driver will not be allowed to operate the tractor‑trailer without an appropriately licensed operator in the vehicle at all times. Failure to have restrictions removed within the 30‑day period may result in demotion or termination.

Pre‑employment Requirements

A pre‑employment drug/alcohol test will be conducted after a contingent offer of employment or transfer has been made, and prior to the candidate performing any work for the Department. Internal applicants who are already in a safety‑sensitive position will not be subject to pre‑employment drug/alcohol testing.

Minimum Requirements for Statewide Maintenance Crews

Constant statewide travel: overnight travel three or four nights per week, 52 weeks per year, with reimbursement for expenses.

The position does not require specialized theoretical knowledge or a bachelor’s degree and is not eligible for H‑1B visa sponsorship.
