Overview
Join our team at UPMC Lititz! UPMC Magee–Lititz Women’s Place is hiring a full-time Surgical Technologist to support our Operating Room on night shift (7 p.m.–7 a.m., three shifts per week, with every other weekend and holiday rotation). Eligible candidates may receive a sign-on bonus of up to $25,000 based on experience. Applicants will be placed in the appropriate job title based on their experience and education.

- Prepare the operating room by setting up and checking instruments, equipment, sterile supplies, and drapes.
- Assemble and manage both sterile and non-sterile equipment to ensure proper functioning.
- Prepare patients for surgery, including site prep, positioning, draping, and possible transport.
- Assist the surgical team with donning sterile gowns and gloves.
- Pass instruments and supplies during surgery and assist with tasks such as holding retractors, suctioning, cutting sutures, and performing surgical counts.
- Ensure all medications are properly labeled and handed to the surgeon per policy.
- Maintain a clean, safe, and aseptic environment, remaining alert to safety hazards.
- Assist with specimen handling, dressings, and post-procedure patient transfer.
- Clean and restock the operating room after procedures.
- Serve as a resource to staff; precept students/new employees, collaborate on committees, and help share new knowledge.
- Patient Care Duties: Functions as a scrub technician in Labor and Delivery surgeries. Assists with admission, transfer, and discharge procedures. Provides personal hygiene for patients. Collects specimens following protocol. Performs bedside glucose testing. Records and reports accurate vital signs promptly. Communicates patient information to the healthcare team. Assists patients with mobility and comfort. Demonstrates competency in age-specific procedures.
- Clerical Duties: Communicates patient information to health team members using information systems. Serves as a resource for operating procedures. Maintains accurate patient records. Organizes the work area. Provides courteous reception to patients and visitors. Handles telephone calls and collates charts. Files prenatal records. Manages equipment appropriately.
- Environment and Supplies: Maintains and cleans patient equipment. Cleans patient rooms according to guidelines. Stocks patient care areas with supplies. Ensures patient safety and responds to emergencies. Maintains a clean patient environment. Refers patient concerns to the RN or Nurse Manager. Uses proper body mechanics. Performs assigned quality checks.
- Customer Service: Demonstrates customer awareness and treats individuals with respect. Is receptive to questions and criticism. Shows genuine concern and empathy. Consistently performs duties courteously.
- Secondary Duties: Assists with patient transportation and specimen labeling. Transports equipment between departments.
- Empowered Team Member: Communicates effectively with all personnel. Collaborates with the Patient Care Team. Prioritizes patient satisfaction.
- PA Legislature House Bill 81 was enacted 10/29/2020 and became effective 12/27/2020.
- Candidates must have 2 years of current surgical technician experience demonstrating advanced knowledge of at least 2 surgical specialties.
- Surgical specialties include, but are not limited to: general, orthopedic, vascular, plastic and reconstructive, obstetrics and gynecology, thoracic, ophthalmic, neurosurgery, organ procurement, and endoscopic surgical settings.
- Access to medications is limited to the distribution of the medication to the nurse.
- In addition to the 2 years of experience, candidates must meet one of the following:
- Completed a program sponsored by a nationally recognized institutional or programmatic accreditation and maintains certification, or
- Completed an appropriate military training program, or
- Maintains certification from an accredited program, or
- Was employed as a surgical technologist in a healthcare facility on or before 12/27/2020, or
- Was employed as a surgical technologist at another healthcare facility two years before 12/27/2020.
