The Role

We are building a UK-wide panel of Scrub Nurses to support surgical in sourcing programmes delivered within NHS operating theatres. Insourcing enables additional elective capacity to be delivered through planned theatre lists outside standard operating hours, commonly evenings and weekends, supporting elective recovery and backlog reduction across multiple surgical specialties.

We are seeking experienced Scrub Nurses with recent NHS theatre experience to support insourced elective lists across a range of specialties. Assignments are delivered on-site within NHS Trusts, working alongside existing theatre teams or dedicated in sourcing multidisciplinary teams (MDTs).

You will be supported throughout onboarding, bookings, rota planning, and ongoing engagement management by Pro Medical’s specialist in sourcing team.

Key Details
  • Start Date: Immediate onboarding available

  • Contract Type: Ongoing in sourcing engagement with flexible sessional allocation

  • Location: UK-wide, NHS Trust operating theatres (on-site delivery)

  • Schedule: Typically evenings and weekends, with rotas agreed in advance

  • Engagement Model: Planned elective theatre lists delivered within NHS facilities. Work may include block weekend programmes, additional weekday evening lists, or ad hoc sessions depending on Trust requirements

  • Specialty Scope: Multi-specialty scrub practice, depending on individual competence and service demand

Key Responsibilities

Depending on the programme and surgical specialty, responsibilities may include:

  • Delivering safe, high-quality scrub practice during planned in sourcing theatre sessions

  • Scrubbing for elective surgical procedures across relevant specialties, in line with individual competence and Trust protocols

  • Preparing and maintaining sterile fields, instruments, and equipment throughout procedures

  • Anticipating the needs of the surgeon and theatre team to ensure efficient list flow and patient safety

  • Adhering to WHO surgical safety standards, infection prevention, and aseptic technique at all times

  • Maintaining accurate and timely theatre documentation in accordance with Trust policies and NMC standards

  • Working collaboratively with surgeons, anaesthetic teams, ODPs, and on-site theatre staff to support effective list delivery

Surgical Specialties May Include
  • General Surgery

  • Orthopaedics (including trauma & elective lists)

  • Gynaecology

  • Urology

  • ENT

  • Ophthalmology (e.g. cataract lists)

  • Plastics and minor surgery lists

(Allocation will be based on your demonstrated competencies and recent experience.)

Key Requirements

As a minimum, applicants must meet the following:

  • Professional Registration: Active NMC registration with no restrictions

  • Clinical

    Experience:

    Recent demonstrable experience working as a Scrub Nurse within NHS operating theatres

  • Competence: Ability to scrub autonomously for elective procedures within your specialty scope, aligned to Trust policies and theatre standards

  • Compliance: Ability to complete full onboarding and compliance checks in line with NHS Employers standards, including right to work and required clearances
