Company Overview

Our client has been established for almost a century and is a market leader in the design and manufacture of bespoke rail solutions for supply across the globe. As a result of continued success and exciting plans for the future, they are now seeking an experienced and enthusiastic Mechanical Design Engineer to join their design and development team.

Role Overview

Tasked with undertaking the design, development, and technical detailing of mechanical systems and components allied to the locomotive sector, this role ensures that designs meet functional, safety, manufacturability, and quality requirements. It will necessitate close collaboration with manufacturing, operations and project teams to support new build, refurbishment, and aftermarket initiatives.

Core Responsibilities
  • Develop detailed mechanical designs and 3D models for locomotives, components, and associated systems in line with project requirements.
  • Produce accurate technical drawings, specifications, and documentation for manufacturing and assembly.
  • Collaborate with cross‑functional teams including manufacturing, electrical engineering, and service to ensure designs are feasible, safe, and cost‑effective.
  • Perform design calculations, stress analysis and simulations to validate mechanical integrity and performance.
  • Support design reviews, change control, and engineering approval processes, and assist in the selection of materials, components, and manufacturing methods to optimise cost, quality, and reliability.
  • Resolve design issues arising during production, testing, or service.
  • Keep abreast of industry trends, standards, and best practices in mechanical design and locomotive engineering.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives, including design efficiency, standardisation, and innovation.
Qualifications

The ideal candidate will hold a degree or above in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline and have at least 4 years of experience in mechanical design within a locomotive, heavy machinery or transportation equipment environment. You will be skilled in the use of 3‑D CAD software (Inventor, Solid Works, CATIA, or Creo) and engineering drawing standards, with strong knowledge of mechanical systems, materials and manufacturing processes.

Experience with stress analysis, FEA or other engineering simulation tools and excellent problem‑solving, analytical and organisational skills are essential.

You will possess excellent communication and teamwork skills at all levels, with the ability to work effectively across various departments. A high level of attention to detail and commitment to high‑quality engineering standards, coupled with the ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines, will be required. An innovative mindset focused on practical and cost‑effective solutions is expected.
