Job Overview

As a Traffic Project Engineer, you’ll play a key role in solving complex traffic challenges and enhancing mobility across urban, suburban, and rural communities. You’ll influence every phase, from conceptual planning to final design and construction support. This role includes mentoring junior staff and fostering learning and professional growth.

Responsibilities
  • Conduct traffic engineering analyses including capacity, signal timing, crash analysis, and level‑of‑service evaluations using tools such as Synchro, VISSIM, SIDRA, and HCS.
  • Develop traffic control, signal, and signing/striping plans in accordance with local, state, and federal guidelines (MUTCD, AASHTO, MassDOT/ConnDOT/RIDOT, etc.).
  • Prepare technical reports, traffic impact studies, and documentation for public and agency review.
  • Coordinate with DOTs, MPOs, and municipalities on permitting, approvals, and stakeholder engagement.
  • Uphold QA/QC processes and ensure projects remain on schedule and budget.
  • Stay current on emerging technologies and best practices in traffic operations, safety, and intelligent transportation systems (ITS).
  • Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams — structural, highway, environmental, and civil engineers.
  • Support project development, permitting, bidding, and construction phases.
  • Conduct site inspections, prepare technical reports, and liaise with municipal agencies, contractors, and stakeholders.
  • Act as a professional ambassador for BETA, cultivating and sustaining client relationships.
  • Assist with proposal development and business development initiatives as needed.
  • Mentor junior staff and support quality assurance/quality control efforts.
Preferred Location and Work Schedule

The preferred location is BETA’s Lincoln office. Candidates should be flexible to work from other office locations. BETA offers a hybrid work schedule, allowing employees to request up to 2 remote days per week.

Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in civil engineering or a related field.
  • 5–10 years of traffic engineering experience (studies, signal design, intersection and corridor analysis, traffic modeling/simulation, traffic control plans).
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD, Synchro, and Sim Traffic.
  • Microsoft Office Suite proficiency.
  • Experience with MUTCD, AASHTO, and DOT design requirements.
  • Excellent communication and technical writing skills.
  • Ability to collect field data, perform asset inspections, and lift/move objects up to 40 lb.
  • Capability to work in hot or cold weather and for extended periods.
  • Valid driver’s license and reliable transportation.
Preferred Experience /Skills
  • OSHA certifications (OSHA 10, OSHA 40 HAZWOPER, OSHA confined‑space entry, etc.).
  • Professional Traffic Operations Engineer (PTOE) designation.
  • IMSA Traffic Inspection Certification.
  • VISSIM proficiency.
