Part‑time, Temporary High School Level English Literature & Composition Instructor – Upward Bound Summer Program

Minimum Salary: $2,800
Maximum Salary: $3,500 – salary may be adjusted based on student enrollment

Position Overview

The Upward Bound Summer Program seeks part‑time, temporary instructors to teach high‑school level literature and composition. Qualified candidates must be able to teach Introduction to the following courses:
Language Arts/MLL, Introductory Composition, Intermediate Composition, First‑Year College Preparation, and Senior Writing Seminar. Instructors will also conduct tutoring sessions for living‑in students.

Responsibilities
  • Develop a responsive course curriculum and objectives that meet DOE requirements for the upcoming academic year.
  • Prepare a challenging course syllabus in accordance with program guidelines.
  • Implement instructional approaches that respect the diversity of learners and employ innovative methods to engage students in mastering the course objectives.
  • Assess each student’s competency level and identify strategies and support services to help them improve.
  • Submit bi‑weekly progress reports and a final evaluation report for each student, meeting established deadlines.
  • Create a supportive learning environment that encourages behavior appropriate to the Upward Bound Code of Conduct, fosters positive social interaction, active engagement, and self‑motivation.
  • Meet weekly with the assigned class Tutor Counselor to discuss student progress, review tutoring logs, and provide guidance and support.
  • Collaborate with other instructors and seek guidance from Upward Bound advisors; meet with each at least once during the summer.
  • Maintain regular communication with the Director regarding organizational and campus issues.
  • Participate in scheduled meetings and tutoring sessions as outlined by the program (e.g., faculty orientations, tutoring in residence halls).
Occasional Duties
  • Attend faculty orientation sessions on June 9 and June 17.
  • Conduct tutoring sessions in residence halls at least once during the summer, including one evening session.
  • Research and select culturally responsive texts for class instruction.
Required Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities
  • Strong commitment to teaching students from diverse, low‑income, first‑generation backgrounds.
  • Excellent classroom management, interpersonal, organizational, and time‑management skills.
  • A teaching philosophy that emphasizes student success through a supportive environment and curriculum.
Required Qualifications

Education: Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field.

  • At least two years of formal classroom teaching experience with groups of low‑income, first‑generation high school students.
  • At least two years of experience developing course curriculum and learning objectives aligned to DOE/Common Core standards.
Preferred Qualifications

Teachers with Rhode Island secondary school or English teaching certification.

Environmental Conditions

Instruction and tutoring occur in classrooms, residence halls, and other college facilities. Participation in cultural and social activities with students is expected.
