General Excavating is searching for a highly motivated Natural Gas Fuser/Pipefitter. This position will be responsible for the fusion of polyethylene (PE) pipes used in the distribution of natural gas. This role requires expertise in handling and fusing pipes to ensure safe, efficient, and durable connections that meet industry standards and regulatory requirements. The ideal candidate will have experience with gas distribution systems, a strong attention to detail, and a commitment to safety.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned:- Fuse polyethylene (PE) pipes and fittings to create leak‑free connections for natural gas distribution systems.
- Inspect and prepare pipes and fittings for fusion, ensuring compliance with industry standards and specifications.
- Operate fusion machines and tools, ensuring they are properly calibrated and maintained.
- Perform fusion tests and quality control checks to ensure the integrity and safety of the fused joints.
- Ensure that all work complies with federal, state, and local regulations, as well as company safety standards.
- Coordinate with field crews to ensure proper installation of fused gas pipelines.
- Maintain detailed records of fusion operations, including materials used, fusion parameters, and inspection results.
- Troubleshoot and resolve any issues that arise during the fusion process.
- Provide training and guidance to less experienced team members as needed.
- Adhere to all safety protocols, including the proper use of personal protective equipment (PPE) and safe work practices.
- Collaborate with other departments, such as engineering and project management, to support the successful completion of gas pipeline projects. Assist equipment operators by hand digging and locating underground obstructions as needed.
- Work with specialized equipment including line stop machines, tapping machines, and fusing machines.
- Inspect and test pipe systems for leaks.
- Assist the equipment operator in digging trenches to required depths and slopes.
- Assist construction laborers with labor duties.
- High school diploma or equivalent; technical training or certifications in welding, fusion, or pipeline installation preferred.
- Certification in plastic pipe fusion from a recognized authority.
- Knowledge of relevant codes and regulations including those set by OSHA, DOT and local regulatory bodies.
- Proven experience as a Natural Gas Fuser or in a related pipeline installation or maintenance role.
- Strong knowledge of polyethylene pipe fusion techniques and equipment.
- Familiarity with natural gas distribution systems and relevant safety standards.
- Ability to read and interpret technical drawings, blueprints, and schematics.
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast‑paced environment.
- Willingness to work in various weather conditions and physically demanding environments.
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one‑on‑one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
Mathematical SkillsAbility to add, subtract, multiply and divide. Ability to perform these operations using units of American money and weight measurement, volume and distance. Ability to read a tape measure and convert inches into tenths.
