Public Safety Officer - PT
Location:
Beatrice, Lincoln, NE, United States – Part‑time (28‑hour workweek) position.
Under the direction of the Safety & Security Coordinator, the Public Safety Officer is responsible for monitoring campus safety and security. Key duties include: observing and securing campus buildings, patrol and surveillance, responding to calls and emergencies, enforcing campus policies, issuing violations, maintaining order during events, and providing professional responses to safety or security situations.
Rules and Responsibilities- Obey all campus policies, procedures, and operational guidelines.
- Do not consume alcohol, use illegal drugs, or report for duty impaired.
- Do not neglect duties, sleep during shifts, or “hang out” in the office.
- Do not make personal calls or conduct personal business while on duty, unless it is an emergency or during a break.
- Learn campus layout, building names, parking lots, and parking permit colors; review parking and traffic violations and issue citations per procedure.
- Wear a neat, clean uniform with good hygiene and a professional look.
- Maintain a positive, professional attitude at all times.
- Use only the minimum necessary force; do not use unnecessary force or violence.
- Do not share personal information of students, staff, or faculty.
- Follow direction of Campus Administrators to ensure proper security and safety measures.
- Assume assigned post, check equipment, and ensure proper operation.
- Review pass‑on information, activity calendar, bulletin board, memoranda, and e‑mails upon arrival.
- Carry the SCC‑issued cell phone to answer all calls and respond immediately to emergencies.
- Make continuous patrols of campus buildings, parking lots, recreation areas, and construction sites to prevent theft, damage, or vandalism.
- Stagger patrols to avoid an established pattern.
- Attend sporting events on campus.
- Respond to calls for service from faculty, staff, students, or others.
- Provide physical, personal, and crime‑prevention security.
- Act as liaison for law enforcement and emergency responders.
- Investigate suspicious persons or incidents and report to local police if necessary.
- Escort students or staff returning to vehicles upon request.
- Issue warnings or violations for improper parking.
- Report unsecured areas, safety hazards, and other anomalies and elevate situations that require immediate attention.
- Complete Daily Activity Report at shift end.
- Respond to all fire alarms and medical calls on campus.
- Perform fire watches when the alarm system is offline.
- Implement emergency and disaster response plans and procedures as required.
- Call 911 for medical, fire, or other emergencies.
- Report all accidents involving personal injury or property damage promptly.
- Assist Residence Life staff or RAs with incidents, including room checks/searches when requested.
- Assist in Clery and Title IX complaints and complete required reports.
- Monitor severe weather watches and warnings and notify campus as per the Safety Management Plan.
- Provide personal safety/security to staff, visitors, and students; de‑escalate confrontations; and lead in emergencies.
- Maintain current CPR/AED and First Aid certification.
- Receive Clery Act training.
- Receive Title IX and FERPA training.
- Receive training on creating CCR reports.
- Participate in all other required training – in person or online as scheduled.
- Perform related duties within the division or program as assigned.
- May perform duties in other divisions, programs, or areas as required.
- Work varied days, hours, shifts, locations, and campuses as the college needs dictate.
- Work schedule may be modified; special activities may require non‑regular hours.
- Knowledge of the Standard Response Protocol and ability to assist with HOLD, SECURE, LOCKDOWN, or EVACUATION during emergencies.
- Handle confidential information securely.
- Professional, respectful, calm, tactful, and firm interaction with individuals and situations.
