Summary

GENERAL

SUMMARY:

The Perioperative Assistant provides direct and indirect patient care as determined/delegated by the OR Manager, Assistant Nurse Manager or Anesthesia providers. Assists with tasks necessary for the general management and organization of the nursing unit or Anesthesia services, based upon meeting patient or unit needs.

PRINCIPAL

JOB FUNCTIONS:

* Commits to the mission, vision, beliefs and consistently demonstrates our core values.

* Transports patient as assigned.

* Performs surgical preps as ordered by physician.

* Transports blood products, specimens, supplies and equipment.

* Assists in patient positioning.

* Cleans operating rooms, scrub rooms, anesthesia equipment and work room, operating room equipment and storage rooms.

Assists with room set up as directed including opening sterile packages and gathering equipment and supplies.

Stocks Operating Rooms per protocol.

Reacts to emergency situations promptly and according to departmental and facility protocols and procedures.

Assists other interdisciplinary members with providing patient care or anesthesia supplies and equipment as appropriate.

* Delivers medications (drugs or biologicals) received in the surgical suite to the appropriate operating room via case cart or medication cart; delivers anesthesia medications as needed.

Performs other related duties as assigned.

REQUIRED

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of surgical preparations activities, equipment and supplies.

Knowledge of anesthesia equipment and supplies.

Knowledge of medical terminology and abbreviations.

Ability to respond promptly and effectively to emergent situations.

Ability to effectively interact with coworkers, patients and physicians.

Ability to prioritize work demands and work with minimal supervision.

Ability to communicate effectively both verbally and in writing.

Ability to maintain confidentiality relevant to sensitive information.

Ability to practice proper body mechanics to ensure personal and customer/patient safety.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:

High school diploma or equivalency required. Prior experience in a medical or operating room environment preferred.

OTHER CREDENTIALS /

CERTIFICATIONS:

Basic Life Support (CPR) certification required per Manager’s discretion.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
